I honestly didn't know the Excavator actually works for mining and not just pickup. Also a question
From the recent update: "NPC ships that have no offensive capability will now dig using their excavators and grinders alone."

The tutorial never mentioned this being possible (or I very much missed it), and the few times I've tried using the Excavator to collect anything besides the ore chunks that get flagged by the UI, it just clogs.

Is there somewhere I can get a complete rundown of ship functionality? I feel like anyone piloting one of these things should at least have been able to glance over a manual before their first dive x)

Unrelated, but I've got one of my crew asking me to go to a station to pick someone up, and getting antsy that I've not done so yet, but I have no idea where this station is. Is there any chance that quests/missions that need me to go somewhere could be updated to provide coordinates or something? I'd rather not have to end up firing this dude to stop him from asking me about this every dive.

I believe the excavator refers to the grinder thing the second ship class uses, which replaces the beak and cargohold the starter has.

As for the station coordinates, I'm pretty sure that's what the astronavigator crewman is for.

I know the Astrogator will REMEMBER coordinates of stations I visit, but this was a quest asking me to visit a station I'd never seen before, so I had no way to find it other than hoping I'd run into it randomly.

The fact that it's difficult to find the station and no-one knows where it currently is is kind of a plot point for this quest. You should just take care of your business, the quest will progress on it's own. This is the way.

Ah, good to know. Though I wouldn't mind being able to tell my crew I dunno where it is so they stop asking me about going there semi-constantly as though I'm just ignoring/forgetting about it.

I saw this and decided to test it out in the demo since I haven't bought the game yet, despite it's frequent freezing, and using the beak to break rocks and deposit them in your cargo hold instead of using your mass drive is a fairly decent option. Breaking them with the beak doesn't make the ore chunks fly away at high speed like the mass driver, and if it's small enough it'll break right into your cargo hold. The main problem is that the rock chunks don't fit easily in the beak.
