For the starter ship, the K37, without this cargo you can have up to 7000units of processed ore for each material, but if you have this cargo you can have way more, so you can stay longer to mine. When you launch it (pressing its number) it will take the maximum amount of processed mineral it can carry and fly off to the base on its own.
When you start to have more processed mineral than your base amount for your ship, youll notice that you ship will feel more cumbersome to move around, because of the mass of the processed ore in the cargo container which imbalance the ship.
Basically, without it, you need to go home when your cargo capacity is full. You've got chunk of ringroids, most of which is water, and some minerals in it. If you go home with 100 000 bucks worth of ahaul, you're veen really lucky.
With it, you ship needs a bit more power to make it work, but it will melt the ice, and store processed ore OUTSIDE of the cargo hold. The processed ore doesn't clutter the hold, and lets you get more. The stunt is, you have a limit on how much you can store for each mineral, per ship.
So, on the K37, the first ship, you can store 7 tons (7 000 kilograms, in case you don't know metric ;) ) of each. 7 tons of vanadium, 7 tons of berylium, 7 tons of tungsten, and so on.
Also, the melted water isn't just lost. It's used as remass to refill your ship's propellant reserves, so depending on your setup, you appear to lose fuel much slower, or even keep to tank topped at all time. Allowing for longer dives, or to dive further, and in the end gather much more minerals.
I personnaly install the Nakamura one on every single ship I have. It's the best mineral efficiency you can find, and the moderate amount of remass is enough on most of my ships anyway. The russatom one is a bit crappy when it comes to efficiency, but it's cheap, and it works in the whole of the cargo hold, not just at the bottom, so it's a good starter upgrade.
Soon enough, you won't finf those things expensive. Especially if you install one. The beginnings are a bit tough, so many upgrades you want, so little money. But the cargo processor helps tremendously on that.
To give you an idea, an average haul in my Eagle is about 400 000 bucks. I've had some good hauls that were worth more than half a million, and that's without the cargo container, because I never use that. A good haul in a K37 is up to 300 000.
Welcome to the business, Ringa :)
