What does it mean when the edges of the screen turn blue or red?
Title. I've seen it happen a few times, I suspect it's related to anomalies or encounters but haven't really figured out the correlation

Ahh, thank you! I normally play with the sound low or muted due to my environment so had not noticed the music changing

Oh god I'm sorry for resurecting this discussion but what does the purple screen edge mean?

That's the mix of red and blue - both mystery and combat music playing.

I have also seen a gold-ish and (IIRC) teal, which I presume are combinations as well (gold-ish when friendly ship was engaging a hostile).

Speaking of - is there any good way to pinpoint the direction of mystery indicated by music/visual cue?

Trying to random walk only to lose it is infuriating.

"generally" they are in the direction you are currently going, but not necessarily. Other than that, you can use your Lidar display or the visual display to see if anything is active around you. In short, no, no obvious indicator.

Nah, it's completely random.

If you're not sure what the mystery is, it's probably a container spawn. Sometimes they spawn on the left edge of the screen and move very rapidly off it headed back to the station. Easy to miss. That, or a ship that spawned moving 40m/s headed away.

They are generally in the direction you are going, with some randomness applied.

Does that apply to mostly not moving ships ?

I mean, if I find a good spot and stay there mining alot of stuff, and then boom, blue / red / purple screen... Does that mean "mostly in the direction I'm facing", "mostly in the direction I'm moving", or "yeah, nearby, sort of" ?

Yeah, it's a pain to try to divine the direction in which your "stationary" ship is drifting at few cm/s.
A velocity vector direction HUD gauge (independent of the other velocity vector display) would be a nice QoL thing.

Speaking of, the other velocity vector display could really use visible zero point.

One of the HUDs shows your ship's velocity as a vector starting with your ship as the zero point.
