Missing game icons on Linux

At the start of the game, a character asks you to pick a weapon (1 out of 3). After guessing which button picks the weapon, there is a blue barrier halting progress until you complete the "follow the instruction" challenge to pick 5 actions in succession as a tutorial step. Problem is that while 5 boxes are shown, the key icons are all blank. You can't see what the game wants you to press.

Only solution was to watch a lets play on youtube to see what the icons/moves are
