A recent update seems to have moved/removed the option to check mics in steam.
It used to be as simple as settings - voice - test microphone
Don't know where it is now or if it still is????
There's been a real problem with USB mics certainly. 3.5mm ones tend to work.
Win 10 can also block mic comms, worth looking at. Although if other apps are working it's probably not that.
Windows settings - privacy - microphone - allow apps to access microphone.
This is a temporary band-aid for some headsets not working in Post Scriptum for talking, specifically some wireless headsets or headsets advertised for consoles but also working on PC (Xbox One Turtle Beach headsets)
1. Download and Install VB-Cable here: https://www.vb-audio.com/Cable/
2. Set your VB Cable as your new default recording device.
3. Go into the properties of your headset and enable listening, set the VB-Cable as the listening device and save.

I did however changed the setup a bit and now have the mic going though a 3.5mm jack instead of USB by a 3.5mm jack splitter that seperates the mic and the left/right channels.
The last method provides a better sound for my teammates according by them but the little fix did work and i played with it for atleast a week maybe 2.
Edit: i also tried the method mentioned above, with the VB-cable but i couldnt get that to work, it did give me the idea to change the device like i mentioned so it partly fixed the issue haha
They changed the UI in steam, go to your friends list and hit the settings icon on the right, mic settings are now in there.
Ya i don't like what they did. If you're in-game and want to turn on friends it pulls you out of game and minimizes it. It used to just pop up in the steam overlay....
