Tank mines too strong?
I did research a bit about tank mines in WW2, yesterday.

It seems as if the destruction of the tanks was only a case for the lightest tanks.
In most cases, the charge would do damage only to the tracks and sometimes a bit to some of the internal systems, too. So the main effect of driving on a tank mine, would have been the following inability to move or changing the facing until getting repairs.

So, maybe the tank mines are too strong? And I did hear words of a lot of them being misused as explosiv charges, thrown directly behind a tank to bust it.

A change in that efficiency could strengthen tanks a bit. And maybe one could think about to let logi crew lay them in big amounts to strengthen their impact on defence, too.

What do you think?

Not much you can repair with on board track sections and tools available on the vehicle. Driving out a track pin is loud hammering and time consuming, not what I would want to be doing if there are bad guys lurking about.

Let's see, first you have to remove track tension so big wrench and a couple of turns, 7 minutes give or take, then drive out the track link pins by taking off bolt (and clamps on Sherman), and with the pin driver and big arse hammer drive out pins to disconect track links, 15min give or take per pin, make sure you have enough spare track links, then pull pins to size the spare track links, another 10min or so. Then place spare links in track and drive in the track pins 15-20 min, retension track. It is definately NOT a 2minute exercise.

And let's fugure at least one set of road wheels blown off or cracked so you would have to suspend bogey set off track guides to move the vehicle, or take off and replace first road wheel as that is usually the one the mine screws up.

A lot of work to get a disabled immobilized track blown off tank moving again. Better to abandon it, and let recovery teams go back for it after the battle iff possible. Higher survival odds for crew, new tanks can be found, new trained and expierienced crews...not so much.

And we did not discuss the brain numbing concussion effect of the blast mine on the crew in 'the bell' as the mine goes 'BOOM'.

I'm scared of using mines because there is no order in the teams and friendlies are just as prone to walk/drive on em.

i would go with mines doing less damage if they added where like you said you could build alot more of them or having some kind of big penalty for driving through a hedge bush. cause the maps are so big and you can only put down 2 of them i think right? out of all the hours ive played ive only seen one tank hit a mine and it was because the guy put it right out of the main base.

I find the anti-infantry mines to be much more effective. Hard to predict wehre an enemy tank will go. But with enemy infantry on the defense you can put em infront of doorway entrances and stuff. But I don't think a lot of friendlies think to check the map for mines...so it can suck for tks.

Mines are in a weird spot. I haven't had the time to really try'em out and I haven't seen them in action too much. The few times I did it was a "SURPRISE!" moment, but I wouldn't say too powerful as I haven't felt their effect just yet. They aren't all over the battlefield after all.

One or two playweekends ago, I tried to step on my own anti-infantry mine. Nothing did happen. I think they do not teamkill. Anti-tank mines do teamkill, I tried it on my own car...

I did read some comments from tank crews which said, tank mines would be quite often used to kill them. But not by laying them down in alleyways. Instead they were thrown directyl behind their vehicle, hoping for it to drive over it when setting back, or by blowing them with bullets.
If that's true, I think, this is not how they are intended to be used.

Heavy tanks with thrown tracks are just coffins waiting to get filled !!!!!!!

i sneak up on tanks and lay one in front or behind, then throw a smoke nade on the opposite side and so many people end up driving straight over the mine its amazing.

If you don't care about k/d-ratio, there is an even beefier way to do.
Just throw the tankmine as near as possible besides the tank (half a meter - 1,5 feet). You'll die by doing so, because it detonates immediately. The tank dies with you.
How abusive... ):

It uses 3 rounds of heavy AT rockets or 4 Panzerfausts to kill a Sherman. But only 1 Tankmine, thrown besides it. Yes, near enemy infantry has always been very dangerous to tanks. But this is a joke.

Now I kinda realize, why tank drivers are quite unhappy with the game at the moment.

Been killed a few time by friendly mines. Engineers need some kind of little flag or too to mark the are in the map or something like that. Would be so helpful.

I thought, that even AP mines are marked in the map with a skull?

No, tank mines are not too strong. Fully expected to see these posts too. "guys I can't sit in my tank and kill 900 people and never die pls nerf :((("

Dear fellow comrade, you do realize, that I'm about 75% of time infantry medic, 15% logistic (may increase in future again) and only (since a few days) in 10% of time tank driver?

At the moment, a full squad can kill one tank, from the front or from behind, just with 2 heavy AT rockets and 1 or 2 Panzerfausts.
Then you can kill tanks with 1x 3kg explosive charges in one hit, as long as it explodes within a few meters around the tank.

And there are other tanks around, which may have damaged the tank in front of you, before. So you may need in 50% even lesser hits...

The bane of (heavy) tanks has almost been infantry in low-sight enivronments like cities and "bocage" terrain. So it should be, and so it is (even without tank mines).
I won't accept tank mines being used in 99% of time as an offensive weapon, as it was created as a straight defensive weapon, and was historically used as such.

The developers cannot call their game historically correct, when they let their community abuse such weapons in a way, they were not meant to be.

------------------------------------

I rarely see any tanks around. This is to 75% because of the not-yet-adjusted-behavior and thinking of the tank crew.
Rest of the percentages goes to efectivity off AT-weaponry.

I think, before they finish and install the tank-damage-zones-system, they should take care of that. But after that, they should care about those problems.

My honest oppinion, without being tankers fanboy.

"16lbs of cumulative TNT and hexogen explosives with a combined effective armor penetration of 16 inches shouldn't kill my invincible tank!"

Honestly your entire argument would be moot if you'd take the time to get an infantry squad escort instead of charging around blindly and getting butt hurt when you get fisted/fausted.

I'm assuming you played squad where it wook 10 RPG rounds to kill an APC, allowing APCs to rack up 600 kills off by themselves and came to this expecting the same thing.

The tank crew behavior I see in this far less than tank friendly terrain leads to many of the assumptions seen here. The game play terrain and lack of infantry cooperation means tanks die, and quickly. Tanks in game are support weapons for the infantry, and in the terrain trying to be offensive weapons with all the infantry AT assets out there means the tank will die, plain and simple.

IRL terrain like this tanks avoid like the plague.

Nope, just scane for them and rely on team mates to keep sappers and AT inf off you, crazy thought I know. Or go play COD or BF1 ;)
