Suggestion for the Ammo Synthesizer.
I had an idea for the Ammo Synthesizer mechanic. It's cool that you technically have infinite ammo, with the balance being that you can only carry so much at a time and there's long cooldowns to replenish.

But it got me thinking of an idea, what if whatever ammo you didn't use, adds to the cooldown?

Like lets say with the Trident SMG, you have a cooldown slot at like 25%. You fire like half of a magazine, so you've got half of the ammo in it left. If you go to reload with a fresh magazine, that ammo gets added BACK into your synthesizer. So the 50% ammo in your magazine adds to the 25% that was in the slot's cooldown, bringing it up to 75%, which lets it replenish a little quicker?

It was just a thought, could have it as an option or dependent on difficulty.

Could also have ammo synthesis speed be an optional setting, to make it faster or slower if you're more laid-back or want a real challenge. Or it could vary depending on difficulty, like ammo regeneration is significantly faster in, say, Story difficulty than versus Hard difficulty.

Nah, it's a deliberate design choice that reloading a half empty mag wastes ammo. It forces you to be more thoughtful about when you reload.

It's also deliberate that ammo regeneration speed does not vary between difficulties: it forces you to use multiple guns. Without limited ammo, players end up just sticking to a single favorite gun, which leads to less fun and varied game play.

I think it's a great game design choice personally. Removes the tedium of NEEDING to explore your environment for ammo and replaces it with exploring for fun and curiosity, or in combat purely tactical advantage. (You won't need to run for the ammo pickup or whatever.) It also encourages you to blind fire or mag dump in ways you simply wouldn't if there were long term consequences vis a vis ability to resupply.

That's fair. But sometimes people like me will sometimes feel deterred from using some guns at all because of how rare I can use them since they regenerate ammo so slowly.

Could we potentially get mutators in the future at least? Having a mutator or even like a dev cheat in the menu after beating the game that lets you go through it with instant synthesis would be interesting to have, since hitting the Refill Ammo button in the dev menu sometimes is annoying.

solid design idea but so you know my ongoing playthrough has just been using a upgraded shotty absolutely most of the time, and only sometimes using more special case, powerful guns/tools

Agreed. I think if the shotgun ammo regen was nerfed a bit, it would encourage players to use other weapons.

Yeah I agree, shotty ammo is pretty fast especially when you max out the shotty so 1 charge of ammo equates to tonnes of damage/usefulness
