So a character has HP, which is expressed as a fraction. A fully healed character with 360 max HP shows a fraction of 360/360. Did your character have 360/360 or did it have 20/360?
When a round of battle occurs, the actions of each character is listed on the right. For example, "A Vampire Lord tears at Gwenno, but misses!" or "Gwenno swings at a Demon Lord, and critically hits for 74 points of damage, killing it!" or "A Golem slams Dupre, and hits for 39 points of damage."
What did the "exact text" say? If the enemy simply does "27 points of damage," then the game will subtract 27 from the numerator of your HP fraction. If the value is below zero, then your character dies. But if there are modifiers in addition to damage, for example if the enemy "critically hits for 26 points of damage, killing her!" or "hits for 26 points of damage, turning him to stone!" then in addition to subtracting the damage, a modifier is added to your character. Critical hits instantly kill. Stoned characters turn to stone. etc. Those modifiers may just change your character's state, irrespective of how many HP they just lost.
When I saw him immediately died, I checked the text to the right. Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly what it said. It's been a couple of hours. It did mention a critical hit of 26.
So, does it mean they don't have to damage me 360 points, but could instead kill me with a critical hit of 27 because the monster found a weak spot in my armor?
Yup, there are certain attacks that have status effects. If you hit [F3] you can see the effects of certain Foes if you've defeated enough of them. For example, a Ghoul has one attack that is listed as "Melee: 9-36 Damage (Wither)," which means that attack has a high likelihood of causing the OLD status, the Demon Lord has an attack listed as "Melee: 32-128 Damage (Petrify)," which means that attack has a high likelihood of causing the STONE status, and the Arms Master has an attack listed as "Melee: 26-224 Damage (Critical hit)," which means that attack has a high likelihood of causing an instant death.
Some Foes cast spells, like the Archmage that casts the Death Strike spell, which means you'll need to look into your spell list to see the effects of that spell.
In this game, a critical hit = death, rather than bonus damage like in modern games. So if it was indeed a crit, death would follow regardless of listed damage.
BTW, just in case, I posted a question over two days ago with no response. By any chance do you know how to increase the storage space in the bank's safety deposit box? Currently I can only store 10 items, but I know for 50,000 more gold I can increase it to 20. But I don't see where or how that can be done.
Thanks again for your help.

I think the second set of item slots may only be available in Volume 2?
