As you were. :)
Trying not to use the guides, but this one is uncool.
No stairs detected with my sorceror sight.
Conclusion : finding the new stairs is almost impossible without using a guide. The official journal indicates it. Imagine trying to find it there. Not a single hint and they are not detected by spells unless you are near and looking at them.
Bard's Tale 2 was designed to be quite time-consuming to solve without a hint-book. With this particular puzzle, you need to wander about a floor filled with traps in the dark to collect three hints, then answer a riddle using those hints, then you need to wander the entire floor *again* in order to find the stairs. If you leave before you find the stairs (for example to refill your mana), then you need to answer the riddle again.
SOSI will allow you to detect the stairs if you face them, but you pretty much need to search the entire floor in order to face the direction the stairs are in, so it only marginally helps.
Each floor in Oscon's is similar. The stairs on the second floor are a bit easier to find if you have SOSI active since they appear very close to where the riddle is answered.
The stairs in the next dungeon (The Grey Crypt) use a similar concept.
So, with each of these floors, if you don't want to use a hint book, be prepared to search every square of the entire floor--twice.
I aim to clear every single tile, so I have been playing BT1 and BT2 for over 90 hours now :P
The Oscon maze (floor 3 and 4) were really time consuming though ! I did leave to sell my loot, so indeed the staircase was not detectable! I backtracked in my unending search, so it did reset the stairs. And the snare did kill me once (I hate timers!).
