This is mainly based on my experience in the original game, so some of it may no longer apply,

In BT1 don't bother with Rogues, Bards (yes you heard right) or Monks, they aren't worth it.

Rogues are totally useless, they can't fight, can't cast spells and their 'signature ability' is replicated by a level 1 conjurer spell.

Bards are almost as tough as warriors but crap at killing things and their songs are useless. Their only real use is to operate Fire Horns, but this doesn't justify a slot that can be used by a warrior up front or a wizard in the back.

Monks look like a good alternative to warriors, but aren't. They do crazy damage but all the warrior classes one shot every enemy they hit for most of the game anyway, so the extra damage a monk does is wasted, and the 'natural armour class' thing is pointless as well because all the warrior classes can max out their AC midway through the game anyway, all it does is save some inventry slots. The trade off is that they have way less hit points, and given that the main job of the melees is being a meatshield for your spellcasters in the back row, this is not something you want

My party is simple, Paladins, Warriors and Hunters in the melee slots (doesn't matter which, they all do the same job, shielding the wizards and killing an enemy every turn), take one of each for variety and so you can use all the weapons / armor you find. This would be 4 in the new 7 slot party or 3 if you re-enable the classic party layout (once that is available)

The back 3 are all spell casters. Make sure you get all the spells in their current class before changing to another (you can't change back). Having 3 Archmages in the endgame is sweeet...

I'm going to run 7 characters: 3 wizards, 1 bard, 1 rogue, 2 hunters.

The wizards are for pure DPS/healing/berserker farming.
The bard songs/horns are useful.
The rogue is needed for winning BT3 + the new backstab/stealth mechanic from BT3 has been backported and makes them useful earlier.
The hunters are just because after a few levels, they critial hit (instakill) everything with any weapon (or even barehanded!).

From reading some comments and watching a video or two, the character creation tactics have completely changed now.

For example Rogues now get criticals and can identify items, something they couldn't do until BT3 previously. So I'd say a Rogue would be very useful!

When rolling characters you want one or two stats to be high and relevant and then for the rest you want the total stats combined to be something like 63-67 total

here's what I went with, wierdly I could not find any race that could roll an 18 starting int; gnomes suck overall the total stats was always in the low 50s so I went with I think elf and settled for an int of 16 that will eventually max out through levelups

monk
paladin
warrior
hunter
bard
spellcaster
spellcaster

in BT3 the paladin will be my geomancer and one of the spellcasters will be a chronomancer; I'll have to replace someone with a rogue for the third game though and I haven't thought that far ahead yet/don't care yet.

Here's a good resource, maps, spells, etc if you wanted to read some information outside of the game.

i use 1 warrior , 1 monk , 1 bard , 3 mages ...
the problem is in low levels one mage will get hit in meele because he/she is at position 4 , and the first 4 chars get meele damage. but later if i can summon a monster or daemon the pet will stand at pos 1 and the mage will change from pos 4 to 5 then.
but it isnt so hard ,, i found a magical scale armor which the mage can use and so my armor class was dropping very much.
the armor class of the monk will also drop every (?) level you gain , because he/she is a monk .. very cool :) and later in high levels the monk will make with his bare hands more damage as with weapons ...

but the hunter was very cool too if i remember right .. he/she was doing critical hits .. ninja style ^^

the mages will get very strong in higher levels ... if one is level 5 and you have enough gold to buy the new spell level 3 , switch one to sorceror as soon as possible.
a sorceror with spell level 5 can cast this wonderful Mangars Mind Blade spell ... any foe will get damage , no matter how far away the group is.

then i played in the old days i remember that i got 2 mages who could cast this spell and it was very cool

and check this : https://bardstaleonline.com/files/!docs/bt1-manual

Critical such as Insta-Kill( AKA Hunter), or critial such as double damage?

What level does your rogue get critical skill? Mine is 4 and her skill is still at 0. My hunter is at 20 and has been levelling it from the start.

Maybe you just worded it badly but I do not suggest rushing any mage levels, once you switch away from a mage type and start on a new path there is no going back. Don't switch until you are level 13 in a magic school and have purchased the level 7 spells is my advice.

When you CAN switch to sorcerer it is a very powerful and good option but don't rush it at every other magic school and it's related spells' expense.

Critical hits in this game are all insta-kills. The rogue only gets criticals when he/she backstabs from the shadows.

Oh I see. I guess I was just expecting to see her skill rise.

ok, ty. Good to know.
FandebarDrakus Aug 14, 2018 @ 5:06pm
I have a Paladin, Warrior, Rogue, Bard, Magician and Conjurer. Got them all to 2nd level with only one death and saved enough to get them healed in the temple.
FandebarDrakus Aug 14, 2018 @ 5:13pm
My critical hit ability is listed as 0 but I hid in shadows and actually critically hit someone. And I'm not sure how it works with mistle weapons. Do you have to have you long bow equipped to use the arrows? I seem to using the arrows well without the longbow equipped.
No offense, but none of you answered my fairly direct question, and would really appreciate someone helping give details on character-creation.

Thanks.
