I guess the aim of the game is to get a pain in the arse riding through lonely lousy dungeons of the past and dont know what to do at last except killing bosses and finding gold to level up ur team to stand the final test and reach the end of the game like thousand of hero-kiddies ve done before..^^

Wine Cellar provides access to Sewers.
Sewers provides information to access the Catacombs (as well as access to final dungeon area).
Catacombs provides an item needed in the next dungeon.
That next dungeon provides an item needed in teh final dungeon, as well as (with the item from the Catacombs) access to the 5th dungeon.
5th dungeon provides information and an item needed for the final dungeon.
Final dungeon is, well, the final dungeon.
Here's the actual specific answer to your question.
The goal of the catacombs is to obtain an item called the Eye. You get it from the Witch King, who is on the 3rd level of the catacombs. He's actually in an area in the map's northeast quadrant that from the 'outside' looks like there's no way in. To get in you have to locate a teleporter at the end of a set of 'twisting hallways' in the northwest quadrant of the map.
Once in the Witch King's "lair" area, you'll deal with the "approach" to his lair, which has a few anti-magic zones (to force you to waste spell points recasting exploration spells - or punish you if you lingered too long in the catacombs and let your spell points get too low before trying to exit), darkness spells (similar idea, except just needing to get out of the zone and recast your light spell), traps, etc. In short - the approach to a "big bad" usually has a few tricks and traps to soften you up before the main fight*, and this'll be a pattern you'll see in the later dungeons as well.
Your broader question: "what you are supposed to do" is explore. Astrosha is completely correct - the "purpose" of each dungeon is to give you something you need for a later dungeon. Sometimes it's an item (e.g. the Eye or the Onyx Key). Sometimes it's information (e.g. the name of the Mad God). Sometimes you'll need the item or information in the very next dungeon. Sometimes it's for something further down the path (like the third level of the Sewers giving you one of the two ways into Mangar's Tower - although you can't actually get into the Tower itself until you have the Onyx Key). The final goal? Make it to the last level of the last dungeon, beat the last Big Bad, and win the game.
*One thing Bard's Tale 1 was pretty 'notorious' for is the "big bad" fights being rather binary. Hit the fight too early and you might not have a chance. Much more likely though is the chance the fight will be very anti-climactic. The Witch King is *usually* the latter. He almost always manages to go first. Almost always manages to hit you (and level-drain whoever got hit - although that is a LOT less onerous than in the original versions of the game), and almost never comes close to doing enough damage to put the character he hits in jeopardy. And then you almost always slaughter him the moment you get to go (often with a character or two whiffing, but the first one to connect a blow does enough damage to drop him instantly). So keep in mind that anticlimactic boss fights are kind of normal in this game. The fight with the Mad God will probably be similar in terms of "big set up, and then you just slaughter the guy." Enjoy it. It won't last. Especially in BT2 and BT3.
