Precisely. I think that this question deserves a rethinking.
So really I think that is the weakest link right now. If he was pretty powerful compared to everyone else in the dark domain it would work a lot better.
i explored everything I could before the chasm. Then I went back and left one of my arcmages at the inn before picking up the winged companion.
Even in a non-melee slot I would have to heal him up every now and then because of effects like dragon breath taking half his health in one tick. o.O
Honestly, I would prefer a 'tweak' to the game in this area. Let's keep the 7 slots, but add the old 'S' slot in addition and let us move the 'S' slot to where we want it in the party (so it would actually give us a total of 8 members during gameplay with 7 Player Characters and one Non-Player Character in the party).
I felt a bit bummed when I returned out of the dungeon with the princess and the whole party got a huge xp boost, except for my arcmage Eleanore that was in the inn whom had helped almost just as much with the quest as the rest of the party but couldn't attend the last stretch because I needed the slot for the NPCs. :-/
