It usually means that character attacks last and may get hit more often. But yeah, OLD is not as debilitating as I remember it being.
I usually get out of a dungeon ASAP when a member has an incurable stat.
After playing the game a bit you might learn how to create better characters (rogues don't seem very useful, CON is really good, etc.)
I played the originals but even with the new version, I deleted quite a few of my starting characters. If you keep your strongest, characters and reroll half your party it is pretty quick to get the new characters up to speed.
You can also play with the premade group, and slowly sub in your own characters (probably the easiest way to start the game off).
38 is not old
Btt: I usually reload when I am just at the beginning or in the middle of the dungeon, but you can usually finish it even if some team members being old.
