Longinus the mad
Hello,

I don't remember this character in the original game and I still don't know who he is and why he is there.
I just can talk to him, but it seems he says some rhyme about Mangar and Caith and Lestradae who I don't know who they are.

Can someone give me some lore about them?

Thank you!!

There isn't any.

in my subjective opinion he's something they put in to cater to inXile to legitimize Barrows deeps lore retconning.

Is he some kind of psychic or something? He speaks of upcoming threats.

Thank you. I really love the original game and this remastered version even more, much more. I will keep him as a misterious mad mage. Maybe playing Barrows deeps it will show up to uncover the mistery ;).

Whenever you see references to "Caith," you can be sure you are seeing an added new reference to the extended lore created for The Bard's Tale IV: Barrow's Deep.

:sotacrafting: It's called "retconning". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retroactive_continuity

Thank you so much. So it's definitely a reference to Bard's tale IV. Great adding.

Could've sworn I responded to this thread the other day. But, Longinus the Mad is essentially a cameo appearance by the lead writer for inXile's Barrows Deep game, Nathan Long. If you compare his appearance and profession to that of Longinus (not to mention name), you'll see plenty of similarities.

Where is this guy? I think I must have missed him.

He's in a building down in the very south-southeast corner of town.

Ah cool. Thank you. I thought I went inside every building. Somehow he escaped me.

What will really blow your mind: Did EA put that Dead End area into the game over 30 years ago with the intention of retconning something there eventually?

Hmmm....

Otherwise, why the dead end guarded with two statues?

I think they did leave remnants of cancelled plans, such as the stables that were noted on the official map.

yeah, some parts were cut out. You still find stuff like that in modern games.

other times, intended features or expansions never were enabled or released; the Alternate Reality series was an ambitious CRPG game of its era and it was so frustrating that there were all these things that would lead to amazing wonderous places and items and... never got implemented.

The thing about the two Stone Giant statues by the Kiosk Temple is that they seem to be guarding something, but nothing was there in the originals. However, if one looks at the portion of the map they guard, it is effectively the other side of the Sinister Street teleporter. One wonders if the original intention was to have a way around the teleporter open up on some condition (Mangar's defeat, perhaps?) and they just never got around to implementing it. To me, implementing that would've been more interesting than the addition of Longinus.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
