I've successfully hex edited my game without any real trouble. It's all in the clear as a binary file.
I don't really understand your question about downloading your game to your PC desktop. If you're talking about syncing games between a laptop and a PC, it should automatically do that with Steam's cloud saves.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\83576640\843260\remote\saves
Write down the amount of gold in your save game, plug it into Windows calculator and convert it to hex, then look for that hex string in your save file. The odds are very high that it'll be what you need. Note, that the bytes may be in reverse order to what you are seeing. For instance if your gold equals 02BA8C it may show up in the editor as 8CBA02. Adjust appropriately.
Someone else posted in here that they had successfully edited their characters into Archmages because the class already exists in the code, even if it's not implemented in the game. He claimed he killed Mangar with Mangar's Mallet as a form of poetic justice. :) I didn't verify these claims, but they seemed reasonable.
