Bank?
I read abut a bank in the manual, but can't seem to find it. Is there a bank in the first game?

Yep. I don't recall the coordinates but... Go north from Garth's shoppe, you will get to the Blue Highway (I think the street is called). Proceed west along this street and then turn left at the first intersection. Walk down a few steps and then go right. Bank should be right there. You can also check the icon next to the viewport (Original Clothmap, I think it's called when you mouse over it) - that might show you the location, in case my memory failed me.
There's nothing there, I've searched every house and road anyway, I can tell by checking my journal. Nothing on the cloth map says anything about a bank. Are you sure this wasn't something they removed from the original?

N25, E14, I'm standing in front of it right now. On the cloth map, it's the lone building just south of the words "Blue Highway" in the top middle.
Yeah... it's an empty house. I wonder if it's because of my Legacy options. I bet it is.

I went full old-school on everything except the automap.

Most likely the legacy mode. The original did not have a bank.

Sorry for late reply. My bad and if so - apologies! My memory must have failed me in this case. :( I am using a mix of different legacy options (not all of them activated). It never occured to me that there might not be a bank at all using legacy mode. As it is, I barely even remember the original. :) There was an old thread somewhere about certain features being "omitted" during legacy, including that Scarlet Bard fellow. Ah well...
Yeah I clicked the option that preserves the differences between the 3 games, so the bank and casino aren't in the first game. The only thing I'm not old school about is the auto-map, love that thing, I've made my fair share of graph paper maps. The only bad thing is it makes the spinner tiles irrelevant, because you can always see where you are on the auto-map anyway. Those spinning things used to drive me crazy when I had to manually draw the maps, like in Wizardry or something. Teleport tiles too. At least in this one it removes your map/position after a teleport tile until you cast Scry Area or whatever it's called.

Automap is a blessing. *thumbs up*. Speaking of graph papers (and those awful spinners). My respect really goes out to those who actually finished the original trilogy - in the old days - when there was no automap. I am thinking about the Death Snares in BT2 (even with an automap they were frustrating). I was rather young when I first played BT2 & BT3, of course. These games were so advanced and complex, at least they felt like it back then. Then again, I recall that many ancient RPG:s were without automap, like Wizardry that you mentioned. Still people finished them. Now, that's a feat. :)
I played a lot of these old school RPGs later on with DOSBox because in the 80s I was a kid and we didn't have a computer. NES versions of those games were hit or miss. The Ultimas were pretty good on NES (not V though!) Bard's Tale on NES was actually really well done. I beat the first Bard's Tale on NES, it wasn't that hard compared to some other stuff at the time.

Wizardry, nope, respect to anyone who beat a Wizardry game. I tried on NES, still have my graph paper maps. I had a party die on floor 6 or 7, the one with TRAPS EVERYWHERE! So I sent another party to drag them back up so I can get their equip and/or revive them. Now I will forever have 2 dead parties on that same floor, within probably 20 tiles of each other. I was so close...

I recall similar frustrating situations in other games. Old school RPG:s could be very unforgiving! Only wizardy I ever actually finished was "Wizardry 7: Crusaders of the Dark Savant." And that game lasted forever... lol. I never could go back to it. Cool that you mentioned the Ultimas - I used to be a big fan of that series. I had no idea they were on NES, as well. U7: Black Gate/Serpent Isle is probably my favourite. Considering what Krome did with this remarkable remaster, I sure would not mind seeing a few other classics getting the same magic treatment. :)
Yes, this template for 80s CRPG remakes is ideal.

Indeed! The don't make them like they used to (modern RPG's). Let's hope for the best; more remakes in the same spirit. :)

I would LOVE a remaster of Ultima IV and V (Parser interface option included as Legacy!)
