Sadly, Newt One just doesn't have enough content, polish, or really even strong enough game elements for me to recommend. Yes, it has a bit of charm, but I think it's all 'feels', really. I like the idea of what is being pushed, but when it comes down to brass tacks - it really isn't all that engaging or fun to play.

Essentially, this is a 3D platformer with linear levels. The levels can feel sandboxy and open at times, but there is more-or-less a path you have to take to get to the end. There are no penalties for anything; you can fall off ledges all you want. We have four worlds and apparently less than five hours of content. The music and artwork are good but both aspect suffer from not having near enough diversity. By the time I was finishing the first world - I was sick of the music. World two was more of the same with slightly different colors and slightly different music.

Now I don't want to simply complain about things without offering potential solutions. I do know the Early Access campaign is quite short for this, so I also understand that some of these suggestions are probably unreasonable. First thing I'd do is get rid of that sterile world completion % meter. This game feels like a fairy tale and that thing breaks the immersion. Why not show world completion graphically? Like, have a frame slowly build around the screen to show completion. Maybe make it look like stained glass or whatever. I think the lack of a walking/moving animation can cheapen the experience at times, so I'd maybe work on that part a bit. I also often wonder if a subtle screen filter would make it feel a bit more storybook, instead of hard-edged polygons. Just food for thought. I think it's a bit silly to have a 3D platformer that only has a few hours of playtime. You've done the heavy lifting with building the foundation, so why not add in heavy collection elements? Also, there really should be some penalty for failing. You can always have an optional 'free mode' for children or whatever. Finally, I'd put more effort in trying to make the worlds more different. You could do this structurally or graphically, or both.

+While repetitive, the music and artwork are nice

Cons:
-This is really an Itch-level game, and I think the price-point and that whole list of awards is going to give some misleading impressions
-The base idea and game are okay, but this really could be expanded upon in nearly every aspect
-No penalty for death doesn't really work for this kind of game in my opinion
-The worlds don't feel different enough
-Other than the initial experience of exploring a new kind of game, this just doesn't keep me interested

Unfortunately this is a hard pass for me. I do wish the developers the best of luck with this, and any future projects.

Cute and artistically creative, Newt One is very rough around the edges. It is a combatless 3d platformer collectathon with a bright cartoony aesthetic, visually a vibrant assault on the eyes with colour clashes all over the place. Cutscenes are a slideshow and I found the text for them was misaligned.

There are four worlds with six levels each with a goal to ‘awaken’ the world - to do this you walk and jump around the level touching platforms and objects to bring the colour back to the world. There are a few ‘powerups’ you can find including: wings to float further, drums that freeze water and a wand that will automatically colour nearby objects without being too close to them. There isn’t any consequences with gameplay as there’s no enemies to dodge and if you fall you just respawn on the nearest platform. The game plays very slow and the controls feel loose.

The store page claims ‘Full controller support’ - I could not find controller options nor would the game respond to controller input. The game description also brags ‘154 Achievement Badges’ but not a single one of those has made it as integrated Steam features.

This game might be alright for younger audiences but personally I found it very boring. I liked playing the game when I had the ‘wand’ but without it trying to 100% a level was too tedious.

I discovered this game at VGM Con 2019, while there for a speedrun marathon; the devs (super cool people, btw) were showing it off. A couple friends and I thought it'd be fun to speedrun, and here I am almost two months later with over 50 hours into this game.

Now, you're probably not planning to speedrun Newt One, but I'd still recommend it, especially if you're looking for a game to chill out with. The engine is good, you can play at your own pace, the game supports many types of controllers, the level design keeps things fresh, and there's plenty to do beyond simply completing the game. Kids also seem to enjoy it, so that's a plus.

I do have a couple nitpicks: The cutscene text uses a rather generic font and lacks punctuation at times, you can only have one save file, and your settings are cleared upon beginning a new game. However, these are all things that can be easily looked past.

Overall, if you're looking for a nice, chill platformer to play, this is for you. And if you're on the more hardcore side of gaming, Newt One offers plenty to do for completionists, and great replayability for speedrunners.

The game does not have any controller support despite being marked as full controller support on the Steam Store page and on an update back in 2019 when the game was in Early Access. It's out of Early Access now and this issue is still not fixed, and the devs have not commented on this lack of controller support since 2019. I cannot recommend it in good faith as it stands.

This game DOES NOT support controllers at all, despite advertising as full controller support. I need controller support for accessibility reasons so I was not able to play at all. (Note the play time is inflated by trying to fix the issue / forgetting to close the game window )

This looks like a very cute game that combines color and magic into the game play and just from the one level I managed to play through on my keyboard, I know that I'd like the game a lot. The game is fairly unplayable with the keyboard and mouse; it's clearly designed to have the smoother control and flow of an actual controller. However, despite the game stating that it's controller compatible, no amount of troubleshooting has been able to get the game to recognize my XBox 360 controller, which works just find for every other controller compatible game. Comments in the forums indicate similar issues with controller compatibility.

Until controller compatibility is fixed and working as intended, I cannot recommend this game.

I first played Newt One at my local gaming convention (2D Con in Minnesota) back in 2017. I was absolutely blown away! The art style, the music, the story, the adorable characters all drew me in and I was instantly hooked!

I played the game far too much that weekend, and the next year too! I became one of the game tester volunteers, and it has been a joy to see how far the game has come from when I had first played it up to this point!

I love this game, it's so fun and relaxing all at the same time! The colors are vibrant and the levels in the game can sometimes be quite challenging, but you are encouraged to take your time and look around. As one of the developers told me, "look around, there is always a solution nearby where you might be stuck.". The controls on the keyboard work great, but it just feels so much nicer on a game pad, in my opinion.

Music is the key, colors light the way, and the journey is so enjoyable!

Seriously, if you would like to play a relaxing, cute, fun game, I think Newt One is an excellent choice!

Cute, non-combat, 3D platformer where you play as Newt who has to restore color to the world. It really is a lot of fun at it's very core. The levels are fun and some of them really show the developers understanding of what a platformer should be. The game respects your time as a player.

The music is wonderful yet simple. Each zone has it's own track that plays, but it plays for the all the levels in that zone. However the track doesn't get old. The music is quite enjoyable to consistently listen to while you go through the levels.

The game is not without issue. There are some areas that will cause frame drops because of the moving platformers. Game is still perfectly playable, it just can be abit ugly to look at. The controls also are in need of optimization. However, it's nuanced. You can still play the game without having to put much thought in to 'getting used' to the controls.

The story ultimately isn't there, but that's ok. The small story they added is something cute and simple. The overall design and build of the game really exceeds expectations. This allows the story to understandably not be the main focus.

Overall the game delivers on what you'd expect from an indie, 3D platformer. I'd love to see this world expanded on.

Lies about having controller support and slippery movement. Really like the look of the game and the music theme but its just not fun in the slightest.
