Remove Horse feeding and drinking till you have a Fix.
Taking care of a horse is harder than raising multiple baby gigas on ark atm. I tame a horse and lvl it up and before i log out at 2 am I have over 8 troughs with water for one horse only to have it die of thirst 4 hrs later.

I know it sounds really stupid, but this survivor crap took a turn for realism. So I don't think the game is broken, the dev just doesn't think like a gamer.

Well, mine do...are you playing single player or online? Someone earlier mentioned that might be the issue? I rented a server for us, so, we are playing online, just curious if this was the difference? And trust me, I have plenty of troughs, food in another, food in the feed slot on their actual horse, but, no...dead. All of them. just in the time I went to sleep.

NGCaliber I di the same as u but with over 8 troughs of water for 3 horses and they died

To answer everyone's question.
1. This is on a private server.
2. Upon server restart the troughs do not empty, I do make sure they are full before logging out.
(however I am using the upgraded trough so water / food last longer, the wooden trough leaks water)
3. You need that wooden post right up against the trough and the horses need to be tied to it. I took two of my horses and walked them away from the troughs not very far, maybe 4 tiles away and logged out. Those two horses died. So there is a radius where the horses must be within the troughs.

Also name the horses so you can keep track of them when making sure they are connecting to water and food troughs. You need one for food and one for water because the horses only seem to eat apples for me when I put them in their food slot, nothing else. If you had success with something else that would be good information to hear.

I saw one of the mods in the discord say that the wooden trough has only 1 feed worth of content in it (so once you give water once, it's empty), but that the metal trough has more (but didn't say how much).

Horses definitely seem to only be able to last about 4 hours. Doesn't seem to matter if they are hitched or not, if the water in the trough runs out, they will die. The more horses you have on the same trough it seems the quicker the water runs out so the sooner they die.

My horses eat berries from the food slot fine, but as with water they will only consume it when the bar drops below a certain level (it's 30% for water, not sure if it's the same for food)

NGCaliber - is the server left running while nobody is on there? Because if it's shut down while not being used, then it's effectively the same as single player, so the horses will be dormant while the server isn't running.

The server is dedicated and runs all the time.

They sure die to easy.

While online you can take care of them quiet ok, BUT as soon you log out its not right.

Their thirst etc should stop while offline, cause players got real lifes to and cant log in every 6 hrs to feed the livestock!

Go vacation and all trained horses are dead? thats not nice.

Non the less this is a game not real life, so simple way to fix, stop the stats while offline please.

I won´t place a dozen troughs to keep one horse overnight.. I rather catch a new one..it´s just not worth the effort and stress.

There is no point as long as they are so buggy.
OceanCrazy Mar 20, 2019 @ 6:34am
NGCaliber u are lucky then cause I only use the upgraded trough, as they are not hard to craft 10 min after starting. oh and have u had your horse tied to the hitch run away in front of u and even though u catch up to it, it acts as a wild horse and keeps running? All the horses are tied up trust me if its one thing i do when i play a game is try to figure out solutions for issues in an early game, thats why i have to log in ans see if the horses i left in a lake are still there lol.

I would think that the horses in a wild west game would be top priority to make work. Don't get me wrong I love this game so far but players are getting sick of loosing the horse. Same for donkey which is much harder to find.

SIMPLE FIX = MAKE ANIMALS NOT EAT OR DRINK IF OWNER(S) OFF LINE!
This is a game not a job and if we have to water them every 4 hours you destroy the use and on this big of a map you destroy the game. FIX ASAP please.
OceanCrazy Mar 20, 2019 @ 6:51am
It is early access thats why i dont mind if they die. i just wanted them to have that there till there is a fix, but its all good since taming a horse is too damn easy atm. They are doing a good job with the updates, so all we should do is give inputs so they can make it better.
Good Old Gamer Mar 20, 2019 @ 6:59am
a friend of mine was running into the same issue - we found out that its technically a *food* bug - ours on his server will ONLY eat Honey if anything else is in their inventory they will refuse to eat it

P.s Dev/Mod comment would be appreciated - do all you care about is MONEY devs????

I've done that too, NG, yet they're STILL gone when I return. My suspicion is that its related to MP servers - i'm on a PVE "Official" server. So even though *I'M* logged out, the server still runs, and thus my horses continue to deteriorate as if I'm online neglecting them. The devs need to code the horses to go into stasis when the owner logs off, I think...

So I put 5 metal troughs down for 2 horses. After 8 hours they are all empty and no horses. Server has not restarted and they are in an enclosed area.
