Saddles and shoes!

So I captured my first horse - beautiful mustang and I made some gold horse shoes form gold I looted from the gold bandit NPC and I made a basic saddle.
How do I put them on? I opened the horse inventory and saw the shoe and saddle slot but nothing happens when I put the shoes or saddle in those slots.
Bug or am I an idiot.
Thanks for all the help - loving this game and this is my 5th question.

You have to put them in the horse inventory then move them to the slots. Its just like our clothes they have to be on the horse before using them, like our clothes have to be in our inventory before we can wear them. Also you have to have 4 horse shoes, these can be in the same slot. I didnt know this when I first started lol. Duh on my part.

Ohhh - i didnt know you have to have 4. I just been using one on my horse all this time lol. Thanks for that info deathfairy :)
