Would like to know about this as well. The page lists "local multiplayer", which implies you could play with your friends on lan at the very least, but the only options i see, are to play single-player, or play online; the online selection's only "host" option, appears to just be a buy link from gportal; some games allow you to invite or join friends through the steam overlay, but that doesn't work here. The game lists "local multiplayer", but even though I bought 4 copies of this game, there seems to be no way for our computers to join each other.
Of course, since two of the 3 computers I tried the game on, single player was completely unable to start (didn't realize till later that multiplayer WOULD work, but single player would crash. who ever heard of that?), but due to the amount of "hang time" waiting to see if the game would run after making changes in the options menu - over an hour of "play time" was recorded without ever being able to get past the menu screen, leaving these games un-refundable.
The irony of finding out that the other computers *WOULD* work online, ended up just adding insult to injury, because the pay-to-play gportal host link promises you servers for "only $1.08 per slot" *BUT* after somebody like me has gotten so frustrated that their willing to go ahead and shell out "a few more bucks" to finally allow, say, themselves and 4 friends to try out the game (hey, it's only $1.08x5 right? small price to pay to not have to deal with any more frustration tonight, so we can *finally* play the game after wasting hours, right?) aaaaaand, no... minimum number of slots is 20. so to play with all 3 copies here at my house? ~$8 for 3 days (3 days, really?) or ~$20 for a month. it's great the price won't escalate if I gain another 15 or so friends, but considering this game was listed as having "local multiplayer", I shouldn't be having to pay anything *at all* for playing together with people here at my house.
So yeah, same question, how do we start a "friends" game?

set up a locale server the information is in the forum somewhere

The wife and I are playing together. Just set up a dedicated server as mentioned.

So, I'm in pretty much the same boat as above. I bought this explicitly for the local multiplayer option (and of course the normal official servers), but there doesn't appear to be any way to host for a LAN game. Paying an extra 20 dollars just to play with two or three friends isn't exactly appealing here.

There is not a LAN button to press as of yet. You need to manually set it up (linked in a sticky). That host server button in the menu should really say "buy server".

Ah, here I thought that sticky was for running a dedicated server rather than just a smaller local affair. Thanks for the info.

Heh, and yeah, the button should really say, 'buy a server.':steamhappy:

@purdy you can rent 4 slot servers from nitrado and it's not as expensive as 20 slot servers. And you can always buy additional slots further down the line if you need them.

Thanks Kat :) That is what we ended up doing. It allowed us to go ahead and play together here, and also allowed the rest of the non-local radio gang to join and try the game out with us as well.
Turned out to be quite a hoot! :D
And (ahem..), without as much of an upfront cash layout. required. Which is good, because I actually ended up buying a few more copies for friends, which kind of made this "sale" a bit expensive for me lol :P
Anyway, I don't know exactly how much it ended up costing or how many slots we got, because my wife set it up since she already had a nitrado account from renting a server for a different game in the past. But i got the impression that it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 or 10 slots, for roughly half the price of the 20 slot g-portal server.
Now, I *can't* attest to anything whatsoever about how well the nitrado servers might run compared to g-portal's. *According to the advertising*, g-portal sounds like they set you up with really nice hardware, but when we tried to bite the bullet and rent one of their $20 servers, it just didn't work. Some sort of issues with the interface; couldn't rename the server and get it to stick, couldn't get a password to stick, couldn't seem to actually be able to make it start and be able to access it. So we sent in a ticket and dinked around with it for a while, but eventually got so frustrated we gave up, and that's when my wife found that nitrado was offering outlaws servers. g-portal did eventually respond to our ticket and seemed quite nice and ready to help us get our server going, but by then we had already rented a nitrado server and really just wanted to move on. I am happy to say there were no problems at all requesting (and receiving) a refund through g-portal, and their staff was pleasant and helpful throughout all of our exchanges. (I get the impression that they are good, but maybe a bit too understaffed for efficiently handling a big jump in rentals all at once). So I don't know how well their servers actually run the game. And on the nitrado side of things, things seem to run great, except when they don't; meaning performance can be pretty random at times, *and* seems to be somewhat different from one player to another, plus occasionally really weird stuff starts to happen and sort of chain react. As in, once it starts getting weird, it tends to get worse and worse fairly quickly. For example, one time i was using my new donkey (Los Bonito Burrito) to pull a cart load of stuff back home, with my 2 horses (Muddy, and Sliver) and things were going fine... Until one of the horses randomly took off back towards where we started from, only starting when it got hung up on a particular rock formation. After retrieving it a couple of times, the *other* horse started doing it too. Then after retrieving them, I got back and found my donkey had *vanished*. But... It hadn't actually gone anywhere... It was still attached to the cart, because I could see it's name and status there. it's just sort of *turned invisible*. it would reappear when I jumped back on the cart though... After a few more times having to retrieve the horses, I got back on the cart, and was immediately attacked by some sort of invisible foe. Randomly taking damage, but as I dodged and carted around attempting to escape, I could see no attacker anywhere. after going a ways, I jumped off to try and fight the nothing, but in doing so, irritated a nearby bobcat. after a tussle with him and chasing him a little ways over the horizon, i went back, and found my horses were there but the donkey was invisible again. Then *something* happened as I tried to jump back onto my cart. And next thing I knew, I was looking around, disoriented, at a seemingly empty desert. The horses were gone, the cart was gone, and at first I thought I was in a completely different location... Then I saw poor Los Bonito Burrito. Laying dead on the ground... Or at least that's what it *looked* like. It displayed a "Press E to Loot" message when I would look at his poor little half-buried body. But when I held down E, I could bring up the radial menu. I was able to make him drink water. I was able to get back onto his back (but since he was laying down, I was leaned clear over almost to the ground, as if gravity didn't exist) and access his inventory. his saddle had disappeared from the slot, but still appeared on his body. I was able to put food into his food slot. and after a bit, I found I could actually get him to move a little bit. By messing around trying to sprint and turn and everything I could think of, I got us to be able to slowly (very slowly) spin on the ground. Eventually I decided to log out and restart my game (in fairness, so far whenever things start getting weird, a re-log usually fixes most things.). But I didn't want to risk leaving my little friend behind in that foul dimension, so before I logged out, I climbed onto his saddle one last time...
When I logged back into the game, There were my horses! There was my cart! And best of all, Los Bonito Burrito! The brave and tiny burro; he had returned to me! :D
Although my hat had mysteriously vanished, along with a few other things from my inventory. As if I'd had to sacrifice a few of my personal items, in order to bring back the soul of my friend from that hellish alternate dimension.
Actually, those items came back later too. After figuring out I could cycle the invisible items through the egg slot on the chicken coup... but that's another story. lol
But anyway, with this game being so new, it's really impossible to know what issues might be due to things with the server, or what might be a problem with the game itself. But the server ran good for me overall as long as I didn't try to cover TOO much ground too quickly, and as long as I relogged if anything weird started to happen.
I don't have much experience on other servers though, so I don't really have much of anything to compare it with. I did play for maybe an hour on somebody else's server last night, and the game seemed to run pretty much the same to me, but the server owner apparently started having glitches and had to relog. So it's still a little too early for me to be able to rate server performance.
Anyway, I love the game, and think it's great that the devs have been doing so well at patching things up so quickly! :D
And although we already found nitrado before your post, I do appreciate that you went out of your way to post it. It's nice to see that the community has each other's back, and is willing to offer help and suggestions ;)

Well, most of it was just meant for fun; the sharing of a glitch I experienced with a community who has all had to endure many a glitch, with a smile.

I do apologize that it wasn't written up to your standards. My only defense, is that I am tired, and I am sick, and what ability I had to concentrate and/or do *anything* at the time I was writing that, was entirely focused on remembering and recounting the tale.

As it was not in a suitable condition for you to be able to enjoy it, feel free to edit, add spaces, spell check, etc, to your liking.
;)
