Looking at the 7 available investigators, The Cook (Zoey Samaras) seems to be the most interesting (I play her often in Eldritch Horror)
Zoey definitely knows how to use her knives
Jim's only weakness is a rather low sanity, but his mental resistance is pretty high to offset it, and he increases the mental resistance of the party. Considering how sanity loss is spammed in this game to the extreme, it makes him pretty damn useful. His combat stats are pretty strong too, with no real weaknesses. Only one investigation skill though, but since most of the skills are guess work anyway... not a huge weakenss.
Zoey is a melee powerhouse, but has really low sanity but a high mental resistance. She sucks at spells, but spells are useful but you can have another investigator use those. Also only one investigation skill.
William has a slightly above average mental resistance but a really good sanity, good combat skills. The fact that he resists negative effects more then others doesn't really seem to matter too much, as either they are rare... don't really matter... or can't be resisted. Again only 1 investigation skill though.
I've played Kate, the scientist, and she doesn't seem to really bring anything to the table that can't be gotten from the given investigators. She's just about average in every aspect, except for range.
Jenny seems average as well. Combat stats are good, minus not being able to use magic... not a huge deal. Not being able to be restrained is nice, but she has almost no mental resistance and her sanity will drain pretty quick.
Sefina and Harvey seem almost detrimental to the game. Extra healing is nice, but you can find a book that does that and her combat stats are based around spells and ranged. Spells are mostly buffs and debuffs and by act 3 one meh damage spell, and ranged uses ammo, meaning you have to be careful with that.
Harvey is based totally around magic. He'd be better if his magic was strong, and not average, but its only average, so others can do what he can do, and have better stuff. His mental resistance is horrible, and he'll pretty much fail every single sanity check out there. He's got a high sanity, but nine sanity will drain horrible fast in this game.
One thing to note, is pretty much look at their mental resistance, and subtract ten from it. Almost without fail, the Mythos clock fills up, and then it's first act will be to lower your characters mental resistance by at least 10% and then force a sanity check on you.
