Ingame, it runs in background and earns things.

Out of game, it is
https://boinc.berkeley.edu
It's a feature that helps unlock modules over time. You can also earn modules by analyzing signals but it costs credits doing it the conventional way. You can pick from two upgrades which will either boost the speed of the BOINC or boost the chances you'll unlock a module.
yeah, i've seen the upgrades. before i exited the game last night, (or the night before) i had boinc running, at like 25%. will have to finish it later.
BOINC is an IRL software package that you can install, and essentially “donate” your computers processing power during downtime to aid various research programs. It’s like supercomputing over the Cloud. It’s actually a really cool system as you can actively take part in software simulations and research projects that are being hosted by various universities, military, hospitals, and privately funded labs, and get statistics back on just how much you “help”. Everything from particle physics to deforestation monitoring to genetic sequencing. And yes, SETI is included in that.

that's cool! i knew it was a real thing, but i thought SETI only had access to it.

thanks to all of you.
