Polarization of the Electromagnetic Waves

I understand that this is a step we need to do when scanning a signal, but I have no idea why, the description is so unclear and I really see no logical way to solve it other then to scan up and down the menu thing it has. Is this the only way to do it or am I missing something totally obvious?

I have not seen any other way to do this step, either. It's just dragging the guide all the way to either side of the spectrum, hoping that you're going the right way. And most of the time, you've guessed wrong, and you have to go all the way to the other end instead. The longest way to the destination.

In this game, every step is an exercise in patience.
