I have been playing this game a bit in the past but nowadays I feel like I am meeting only bots in battles.

I can confirm that there are some amount of players who plays this game. I have to admit that this amount is less than we all would want to see, but it is still significantly more than zero. So my advice is: try to write in game chat (every once in a while), add friends and cooperate with them.

Is this game dead now? I get "Error connecting to game server" when trying to play.

Unfortunately yes - the game is dead now. Recently, we had to shutdown the game server due to insufficient income (didn't cover operational costs).
