Controllers do not work properly...

I was really wanting to enjoy this game, but there is a critical error in that getting controllers to work is like pulling teeth. Everything worked fine the first time I opened the game, but then it just stopped working the next time I tried to open it. Now, despite it needing no extra work compared to the DS4 controller, just to get a DualSense to work now is annoying and difficult. I have to use BigPicture Mode (which sucks and should not even exist), then I have to start and stop the game multiple times, usually reloading a controller configuration (Steam controller configurations also fail most of the time and there seems to be no way to get it to work at all outside Big picture, which again sucks really bad.) It's getting to the point that I am about ready to stop playing the game altogether and ask for a refund. Is there any way to get a controller configuration that works with all games? Is there any chance the devs will actually add controller support? The DualSense is the absolute industry standard gaming controller with little to no competition, so it really is unacceptable to not have support for it. How do I get this game to work the first time I open it again? I feel the developers really dropped the ball because platformers are not played with a keyboard and mouse.

went exactly through the same issue and I need a solution as well. I used my DualSense the first time and it worked without any problems until the second time I booted the game and it just does not want to read the pad's input even though steam and windows both register inputs normally. I tried to start the game from BigPicture and normally many times to no avail. not sure if this just happened after the recent update or if its related to it

I have this exact problem with my Xbox controller! It worked great the first time I played it, now all the buttons are messed up every subsequent time I start the game, and the directional pad doesn't work.

same with 8bitdo pad. It works but can't move with the DPad, and it seems you need a combination of pad and keyboard to even navigate the menus. What is it with japanese developers and horrible PC implementations?

i have a similar problem too-- i just got a Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710 and was excited to use it on this game, but only a couple of the buttons register and they are mapped all wrong. even if i remap the two that register, that is not enough to play the game. the controller works fine on every other game.
