FWIW, I'm using an 8BitDo Pro 2 controller, which is my favorite game controller thus far, compatible with Switch, Linux, Windows, Android, etc.
By the way my 8BitDo doesn't work either :)
Which 8BitDo controller are you using? I use my Pro 2 in Xinput mode.
I completely agree about the game just not working and being abandoned. While this isn't an excuse for them, from a development perspective, it seems highly tied to whatever framework / engine / tools they are using. The way the game scales, handles full screen, various resolutions, etc, is kind of a mess. I suspect this is because of whatever they used to keep the game scaled properly with pixel art (a pain in the ass on modern hardware), but the issues should have been remedied regardless, or the game ported out to another setup. My guess is they outsourced this mini-game to the original, or put interns / junior devs on it - either way, it's likely the tools, without much they can do, which is why they don't. Not a defense, just an observation.
I had already played through the game months ago, I guess I must have used the official XBox series pad
