that being said i only have one last question: if top down can do both styles, why would you make a side scrolling project? are there any perks exclusive to it other than presets?
Side scrollers typically do not need auto y sorting, and really in most cases do not want it at all so it's actually a benefit not to have in side view scenes. Top view can mimic the side view no y sorting by setting specific display priorities for objects, but side view cannot mimic auto y sorting (thus on a both view game you want top view). The other benefit of side view projects is when you create a scene they automatically come with gravity, where if you have top view game they automatically don't come with gravity. So if you know your game isn't going to have top view designs, then definitely go with side view.
