Is it or will it be possible to create custom sprites within the engine itself, without having to import any?

Hi Mckinley! It is not possible to create custom sprites within the engine. Every sprite must be created by the user (either hand-drawn or using an external software) and then imported (for example in a PNG format) into Pixel Game Maker MV.

We do have many resources already in our sample games that you can use!

Ok. Thanks.
Anyone got any recommendations of good external sprite/tile-making software that can be used? How about audio software? Preferably ones that are user and newbie friendly.

I've been using GraphicsGale for a while now and I would recommend it, its only for windows though https://graphicsgale.com/us/

I don't know how art or music savvy you are, but I can reccomend the following:

For Pixel Art, Aseprite.
This application is made with pixel art in mind. It has it's own animation tools built right in to make animating sprites easy. Also has a tile view setting to make creating tiles easier. Nothing wrong with Graphicsgale though.

For Music, FL Studio.
FL Studio is the pricier software at $99 starting, but it's surpremely powerful, efficient and newcomer friendly. there's lots of YouTube tutorials out there and plenty of content creators there that do video lessons for free.
However, if price is a concern, I know there's a myriad of free open source Digital Audio Workstations of varying capacities out there to grab if you google it.

How's Audacity? Do you know if it's good for beginners? I'm interested in it specifically because it's free.

Audacity is for editing audio, not music production (unless you have a bunch of stems and samples already made, in which case it's just tedious). Audacity needs to be on your computer, regardless - it's a bit of a swiss-army knife.

Try LMMS[lmms.io] - it's a FOSS clone of FL Studio.

There's also RoseGarden for MIDI-file editing and OpenMPT if you need a tracker. While both FOSS as well, I think you would prefer LMMS for primary music production workflow.

Oh, also check out Ardour DAW. It's a lot more traditional and technical though and might be a bit much if you are looking for newbie friendly.

Rytmik is also cool if you are looking for something fun, but the intuitiveness of its UI is objective and seems to be hit-or-miss for most users. As a newbie, you'll either love it or hate it :s https://store.steampowered.com/app/657280/Rytmik_Studio/

Pyxel is a good pixel editor to check out too. It's not free, but it's got a comfortable and intuitive UI. Although I can make a supporting argument for either Aseprite, Pyxel or Pro Motion NG as I see them all being favorable depending on the project goals and would recommend trying them all, if you get the chance, to personally figure out which works best for you.

If you're looking for some more imaging software, I started a list of visual tools on the RMMV resource board - you can check it out here.
