One thing I didn't realize immediately, which may help you, is that to turn quicker you have to stop running. And you can crouch-run under stuff to easen up some pursuits.
But yeah, the game doesn't get any different, it just gets "more of it". Tasks are harder, both to pull of and actually guess what is to be done.
Generally... if you don't like first level, you won't like further ones. AI is actually pretty good, they for example remember everything they've seem, which can undo your carefully laid plan just because someone sees a stray sock somewhere where it should not be and then sees plenty of other stuff.
also it's full of messed up stuff and your main complaint is controls?
