can three people do local?

one of my friend got the game, and the other plays with then via local multiplayer via controller. i asked them if they wanted to do THREE player local multiplayer, with me playing with em via the new remote play together, but they say that you can only do two geese. is this true, or is it just normal local multiplayer where you can have up to four people?
