couch play never seems to work? why?

You mean crouch ? The goose doesn't crawl, it is not a toggle button.
The only problem is the goose must be oriented to face the object it wants to grab and it is not always obvious. Maybe it explains why it doesn't seem to work properly for you.

yeah that's still in it's babyshoes it works okay for some games but just not for others. I have the same problems unfortunately
