How do I play with a friend?

I'm new to the multiplayer (play with a friend ) game play. If someone could please provide me with step by step instructions on how to do this I would greatly appreciate it. My friend and I live in different states and we both have this game installed on our computers. Thanks.

it's "local" co-op/multiplayer only.
but fortunately, steam has "remote play together" to help.

Thank you. We followed these instructions and were not successful.
When I invite my friend to play, how do I know they accept?
Do both people have to have their games up and running before you can play together or is just one player's game open.
After I select two players in the game options and press 1 for mouse and keyboard the only thing I can do is back out. Is this normal?

with this game, at least one of you will require a controller.
it won't allow 2 players to both use keyboard and mouse.

Only one of you needs to have the game running, then invite the other.
