DeoVR Video Player

Playback issues resolved.
For anything over 6k, LAV filters will struggle.

This is because even with LAV enabled (using Direct Show in DeoVR), DeoVR does not use Hardware decoding, despite it being selected in LAV. You can tell this by looking in Task Manager | Performance | GPU | Video Decode.

Unfortunately I found I could not deselect "Use Direct Show" in DeoVR. The reason for this is that on my Windows 10 PC, HEVC extensions were not installed, so DeoVR has no alternative.

Solution. Install HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store. You can THEN deselect DirectShow in DeoVR and 8k videos play silky smooth. Hardware acceleration is working as confirmed in Task Manager.

Any free alternative?

edit: Found out HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer is exactly the same thing as above, only free.

Yep, was about to say there's a free version. Please let me know if it fixes your issue...

assuming media foundation is functioning (was broken on some 9.x version of DeoVR) the HEVC extension should make it work. its performance is better than directshow with LAV filter

However, if you see a video stutter with mosaic blocks glitches then you turn on DirectShow.

yes. but unfortunately some stutter were introduced in newer version (anything 9.x) , even in media foundation, possibly due to the browser(?). 8.x version has less frame drops/stutter

I agree, just when we got everything running good something messed up the fluid play on hiRES vids. It could have been the direct show filters settings or files from k-lite codec updates, a nvidia update, or the player update.

it's none of the external stuff because 8.x version doesn't have those problems

I tried this fix and installed HEVC but videos still run low fps and I cannot deselect direct show.

Thanks for this. It helped make 7K and similar videos run markedly better, even though still not exactly perfect. I'm still not sure why I can't hardware decode them with my brand new 3080Ti when it seems to work perfectly fine on the Desktop with the same files. While trying around the old NVIDIA CUVID Hardware Decoder from the newest LAVFilters actually seemed to work better than DXVA2 (you gotta restart the video to notice the differences) and DXVA2 (native) lagged around a lot.

I don't know why there isn't an Easy-to-Use and user-friendly player like MPC-HC or similar for VR where you can choose your own External Filters and Prefer them or even pass the videos through something like madVR for the extra touch and filtering. The closest thing seems to be SkyBOX VR, but it seems to be mostly abandoned with the devs concentrating on Quest now and it uses unchangeable internal Filters that lag on high res videos.

after installing HEVC Video Extensions i was able to turn off "Direct Show" but i still had to turn the resolution in steam to 50% to watch anything smoothly. I have an RTX 3070 so something is definitely messed up with DeoVR

these new versions are garbage.. the olde DeoVR played all my 6K,7K,8K video on RTX2080 Ryzen 3900x CPU, now I only get 10FPS ... waste a lot of time mucking with codecs, when issue is DeoVR software.

I dont think it is good anymore as developers rekt a working system to now a crap system only able to play 5K video
