DeoVR Video Player

Bug Report - DeoVR is leaving behind ffmpeg.dll processes after exiting
There seems to be 1 ffmpeg.dll process spawned for each video played - these are all left running indefinitely after closing DeoVR. I have to manually kill each one.

This started happening recently. Seems like a bug

That's odd, are you using ffdshow (DirectShow)?
By default Deo uses LAV, not ffmpeg

I have directshow off in Deo, but it is set for LAV not ffdshow

Are you mirroring?
Bethor Oct 1, 2020 @ 10:05am
no

Can you try something for me?
(assuming you're using windows 10)

Make sure all ffmpeg instances are closed.
Maybe even close the Steam client.
Play an mp4 with Movies & TV app and close it again.

Do you now have ffmpeg still running?

Yes I have Windows 10. I tried it - Films and TV doesn't load ffmpeg, I'm assuming it's using Media Foundation being a Windows app?

I have K-Lite codec pack installed so I tried Media player classic, that doesn't load ffmpeg either. Codec Tweak Tool preferred directshow filters are set to default LAV

Hi Bethor.

Deo also uses WMF.
The devs earlier could tell me ffmpeg is used to generate thumbnails in DeoVR, nothing else.
They have put it on the bug-list.

Thanks for reporting this!

Interesting - I have had major slowdowns when thumbnails are generating, I had to switch to list view.
Glad to help, looking forward to a fix!

exactly. It happens when tghumbnails are getting generated. if I use list with no thumbnails the issue is gone.

5 years later and this ♥♥♥♥ still happens
Hello and here is the fix:

1. Download ffmpeg.exe:
https://www.gyan.dev/ffmpeg/builds/ffmpeg-release-full.7z (ffmpeg.exe is inside \bin\ folder)

2. Rename the ffmpeg.exe to ffmpeg.dll (Disable "Hide extensions for known file types" if you can't)

3. Replace it with the ffmpeg.dll in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\DeoVR Video Player\DeoVR_Data\Plugins\x86_64\

4. Enjoy and leave an award :)

EXPLANATION:
ffmpeg.dll inside DeoVR is not a DLL file. It is an EXE file. It just has a wrong file extension.
And this ffmpeg file is somehow broken to hang on thumbnail generation for some video files.
