Serious Engine is finally dead
To which I say: good f*cking riddance! That thing was abused in Serious Sam 4 so much it wasn't even funny. I don't think that game will ever run properly.

Let's hope that TTP2 won't suffer from classic UE issues, such as shader compilation stuttering, traversal stuttering, atrocious CPU bottleneck and lack of support for 8 kHz polling rate.

I just heard the news. RIP SERIOUS ENGINE. :steamsad: I'm very sad the team couldn't fix SS4 nor will it ever be properly fixed without Alen.

Best of luck with Unreal 5.2, though. Fornite's huge multiplayer count ability will make for a REAL Serious Sam game, the way it was meant to be played ! ! ! :serioussam:

Serious Engine was ok till SS4
Soüp 21/jul./2023 às 20:35
Did this get announced somewhere? I saw someone mention it the other day on Twitter and have no clue how he found out. I have to say I'll miss Serious Engine but after how poorly SS4 runs, I can't say I'm surprised. I'm sure a studio this size just doesn't have the resources to maintain a quality engine using modern tech.

The only thing Serious Engine needed was better light system, or in short dynamic lights.
Everything else was ok, except those bad animations on the human npc and players.

Its quite obvious that Alen the main brain behind the engine left and this costed allot on Sam 4's development.
Terepin 22/jul./2023 às 4:53
The lighting system was not changed since SSHD. It was ancient as hell and certain sections in SS4 look outright disgusting and unnatural to the point I wanted to claw my eyes out. But it was not only lighting that was screwed, the whole rendering pipeline was broken as well. Never in my life did I see a game with such atrocious CPU utilization and I played The Callisto Protocol. And if your game runs worse than TCP, then you f*cked it up beyond words. There were instances during hordes in which framerate dropped into sub 40 FPS... with 5800X3D!!! How in the f*cks name can you destroy the engine so much that even the best gaming CPU (at the time) was incapable of running this game properly?! I dont think I have ever saw a 100% GPU usage anywhere in the game. It boggles the mind. And then there were smaller issues, like broken LOD, shimmering, textures that looked like from a PS2 era, outright borked ambient occlusion, etc. All in all, SS4 was from a purely technical standpoint a literal piece of sh*t.

Sounds as bad as typical Unity and CryEngine. :taloslol:

So I guess it's safe to assume Talos 2 will be another botched UE title.

Well both the DX12 and Vulkan renderers are basically broken in SS4. I'd say that's a big problem. And forget any more cutting edge tech like raytracing or virtual geometry (Nanite.) Of course now we'll probably get horrendous shader compilation stutter instead.

Still, where did everyone hear about the engine change?

Not sure if they've officially announced it but you can see in all the footage that it's Unreal.

Check the Talos 2 trailer at the end it clearly shows UE engine logo.
Its not that hard to think why the engine change considering Croteam lost their main engineer that made the engine.

What trailer are you guys watching? Both the trailers I've seen just have Xbox, PS, and PC logos at the end and nothing else.

If the trailers aren't doing it for you, hit up Croteam's Discord.
Lots of talks there. One of the developers said yes. It might be the publisher's decision also.
Since you know Croteam can't spend more years updating an engine that simply works worse with each new game. But also because they lost their main lead engine designer to Google Stadia and then Roblox.

Yeah I completely understand why they're making the change, and I'm sure it's for the best, I was just confused about where everyone heard about it. I'm still confused since I'm not seeing the UE logo in either of the trailers posted on Youtube or in the original Sony presentation.

Maybe they try to make it a surprise. Maybe for the average gamers, most veteran gamers they can tell that is UE. UE is the most used engine, Unity might be a second but that one is used more by indie developers.
Yeah the PBR and lighting are unmistakably Unreal.

Ok so first you tell me that there's a logo in the trailer which is obviously not true, then you tell me that everyone just assumed based on the general look of the game footage? Fine I'll ask elsewhere. I don't know why you bothered responding if you don't want to give me a real answer.
