IF THEY FIX IT - then single player can be lots of fun. However, just like ARK - its quite the challenge to defeat some of the more advanced PVE content on your own (verging on impossible). You can of course fiddle with server settings and such but I wish they balanced it a bit better for small groups / single player.
I quite enjoyed playing co-op when maps weren't actively broken for single player / coop.
The development team has not updated the singleplayer mode for a long time because of the patches applied to multiplayer would break the singleplayer saves people have accumulated. BUT! They explained in their road map to season 10 that they plan to solve this issue.
Over all, I do think the singleplayer experience is worth it. 30 hours in, no complaints yet.
1) turn difficulty all the way down so you can do basic treasure maps solo
2) The Cog is more than enough to do basic exploring, its easy to build and easy to crew
3) bring enough resources or just have the blocks on hand for placing a foundation and bed on a new island you explore, the game bugs out occassionally when you die and may loose track of your ship causing any beds on it to not be available.
they do have SP stuff marked in their roadmap so thats good.
Fun... but... neglected.
The longer you play the less playable it gets. Not sure if the bug with pirate buildings still exist... but any time you load up the game another copy of the same building is placed.
I had a time the pirate building had 20+ layers of walls in the same spot.
Since they moved more towards PvP don't expect much to come for PvE. Which is a shame, the base game will never support great PvP anyway so its seems wasted potential. Too many steps you need to check to engage in PvP (this never works in a good PvP game).
I bought ATLAS during a Steam sale maybe 2+ years ago and have yet to launch it. I've been waiting to hear positive things about single player before pouring time into it. Hearing other single players express their frustration has been a pretty big deterrent for me diving in and I have plenty of other games to enjoy.
I really don't want to put time into the game if it's just going to be an exercise in frustration.
Please give us an update on this thread once you've put enough time into the game to give us your overall assessment.
Someone should tell them that it really doesn't matter. Other games here on Steam release versions that require a new savegame, especially if it's a huge update, meant to sync with the multiplayer goodies. I wouldn't mind because the actual state is a buggy mess.
IMO they could easily get rid of the single player mode entirely. We have a non dedicated server mode. That's all that matters. Why have multiple codebases when you can offer dedicated and non dedicated server modes? It's kinda odd to have both non dedicated and single player since you can play alone in your server. I can do that in 7DTD when I play alone. It loads a non dedicated server on the background. If ATLAS was a game that relied on a story that you could only find while playing single player... but there's no story... so no excuse, guys.
In a non dedicated server we can play both alone and with friends/family. I don't know why they keep insisting on a redundant game mode that only makes it difficult for them to maintain.
great shout. i will take a look at running a local server to access all the latest content. does the sea still clip into the hull, as that is really annoying?
I see some clipping issues but nothing as big as trying to get to the ship's ladder. Argh! Lol
The major issue we were facing was not being able to change grids, especially when another person was playing. It seems they have fixed a grid switching error in the latest patch today. Can't wait to try.
the offer is much appreciated and at some point i will have to test the PVE as i want to get the most out of this game, so looking at all game play options is part of that. currently im just getting used to the mechanics in game, and there is a lot to learn.
