Mem dumps and bad optimizations for all to enjoy.
As a mod, it needs ALOT of work. I personally think its really insultingly bad how much needs fixing, its been years.
BUTT! ( : )
Ive got 350+ hours into it, worth my wampum.
If you have played ARK, you have played this, just without the boats.
Its pretty nice to look at.
Its the best sailing pirate game out there right now IMO.
Building a ship to your liking is my favorite part. (Ive built massive galleons with indoor planters, gilded windows and filigree galore. It was beautiful and laggy.)
Exploration can be pretty fun.
So, in comparison to Sea of Thieves, there is not much comparison, vastly different projects.
This is a survival game, SOT is combat focused and session based.
Things you do in ATLAS actually matter.
SOT does have better combat fluidity overall.
SOT is actually optimized.
MP is just as toxic.
I have not played SOT in forever because of login BS. ive been trying for a very long time. (not sure if thats relevant, but you wont be locked out this game.)
Overall i would give 'ARK: The Drunken Sailor' a 5/10 TBH, on the grounds it needs a ♥♥♥♥ ton of optimizations and they still have old ARK code in the files. Its just a mod, that needs more mods to be a good mod...
Take all that with a grain of salt, i hope this helps your decision.
I want to agree that they put no effort into making this, and to an extent i do. But there is enough here to quantify work has been done... lol
But atop that, i understand this was meant as a test bed of new tech they've been working on. Clean Intra-server travel, and server isolated nodes.
Which they did'nt do a good job at.
I would only ever play either game on private servers personally.
As was said above, the ship building is the best part IMO. Modifying your personal vessel just the way you want it is super addictive. Once you get it done, you gotta be careful and not lose it though.
I also love Sea of Thieves, but that game got old after doing the same thing so much. SoT has better graphics and runs better, but Atlas looks really good too when you crank up the settings. Like SoT, sailing on the water is immersive, you can almost feel like you're there and can feel the wind on your face and taste the salty air.
IMO, Atlas is infinitely more fun with a group of friends and/or on a server with other people. Single player would be boring for me (then again, some people like it). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this game to people. Just be prepared for a bit of jankiness.
It is just a pitty, that the devs waste their time for the new modular ships, which limit players creativity, instead of new legacy ships and quality of life improvements for all players.
Instead of that, they bring new mini bosses, which can only be done by their beloved huge 24\7 troll megatribes. Plus some spooky undead stuff, that destroys the original pirate idea.
If you want to try nevertheless :
- buy a ramshackle sloop at your starter freeport
- sail to a nice island close, where claim towers are not allowed
- build a small wooden base close to the beach
- kill animals with the bow to level up
- build a simple dock
- build a tramp freighter in the dock
- transfer your stuff into the closed rear cabin of the tramp freighter. You have more than 10.000 weight, dont overload your freighter, It will not sink from this, but draw 24\7 little boys troll attraction. It is unlikely, that someone shoots down your freighter, as it will take a little effort. Little 24/7 troll schoolboys hate efforts. For doing homeworks or killing your freighter.
- dont release your freighter, as it is your base for now
- build a second dock and construct a sloop with medium speed sail there.
- go out for gold, best is grey/green treasure hunting. Defeat the guards with the sword, crossbow or a pet (Ostricht, bear). Also go for floatsome and dive for treasure. You can attach a diving equipment to your sloop
- when you have 1000 coins build a small armored dock. Build a schooner and anchor it in this dock. This is you new main base. It is no problem to overload your base schooner, as ir will never leave the dock
- from now on you are relalivly safe in your dock. To destroy it you must really piss off a major tribe, as dock destruction takes HUGE efforts, by far too much for the 24/7 little troll boys. Store your tames and crew also on the base schooner, they are safe there as well
- now the fun starts, build more armored docks and store your warships there. Plunder and terrorize your island and the surroundings
Have fun ! HAR ! HAR !
you spend all day farming a boat to loose it to a bug , (they like to break dance and go crazy and sink), You can also loose your entire island of stuff due to bugs,so all your stuff you spent a month on is lost to a bug. you have the chance of loosing your ship when crossing over boarders. I seen on discord people loose max level stuff this way. You will get stuck on ladders alot and loose stuff. And, the worst, there are dev exploits or hackers. I had a boat in a free port (Safety zone no damage) And then some how 4k gold poof vanished. nothing else, just the gold. YES IT WAS PROPERLY LOCKED. Go on the discord, you'll see all kinds of these story I mentioned above, So unless you got an iron soul. Dont waste your time Official. EVEN SINGLE PLAYER. i spent a weekend making boats, sailing away. I would die, then POOF boats gone beds gone and im back to starting island....
COMPARING SEA OF THIEVES TO THIS IS WEIRD IN MY EYES, SOT you play right away. Atlas, you play for a few months 8 hours-12 hours a day, you might get to see some cool content, IF you don't get raided lolol
The tribe system (Company) Needs serious work, Unless your in those 100+ mega tribes, theres just no point, best part is they will be toxic to you and tell you to "get good" Even though they all moooch off the few good players and get all free resources, acting like they good lmfao, YEAH YOU LOST SOULS AND MATRIX. MERCH OR DIE. Not once did i have a nice encounter to any of them. God only knows how badly devs abuse ♥♥♥♥. ADD A SMALL TRIBE SERVER WITH NO ALLIANCES !!!!!
One time some was controlling my boat , making it turn around and sail all on its own. That's not a bug....
THEY NEED TO REDUCE THE NUMBERS OF ISLANDS A TRIBE CAN BUILD ON, OR THE GAME IS RUINED. Because auto farms are a thing here unlike ark, you put down the building and over time it farms mats, so you won't have a slightest chance to even compete dino or hand farming. everyone I met whos not friends with the megas, quit because it's just to time consuming trying to even find a place to land, or compete in any way.. You could spend hours n hours n hours, just trying to find a place to park your boat so you can go to bed lol.
Fun to play and such but yeah you really need an iron soul for all BS this game offers.
Funny how this is so compared to ark. I mean it is their engine or what ever, But ark was learn to hack and exploit or you loose... 7k hours in that game and thats all they do , anti meshing, dino breed breaking, item and mat duplicating. Body teleporting to find your base, I got evidence of it all.
My advice to you, go get a gf instead. Happy gaming.
