Finding water

What's proven the best way to stock up on enough water to sail away and explore? Im not finding much green ground on the island im on. Im guessing building a well is possible, but wont that require finding unclaimed land(which is its own problem)?

But it needs to be filled after construction, correct? I can't even get the water skin filled.

Open the lid, and every time it rains, it will fill up the barrel a bit.

The first easy thing, make a couple of waterskins. After that make a couple of jugs. Yeah the water barrel are good but they also weigh a lot. Or limit how much weight you allow in. 6000 water is going to weigh as much as a lot of other stuff that could be on your ship. If its on the ground who cares, make a barrel.

Thanks guys, knowing that the shovel would get me much more water was a game changer. Died of dehydration and respawned in Freeport. Built a raft, loaded it with a bed, cooking station, and smithy. Made a shovel, built a barrel, stocked up supplies, and am currently on my way to where my ship is anchored.

Best advice, I always have 2 barrels at least at the stern off every ship.

just do what everyone else does , place a bed down , and completly ignore food water and the nutritional system , and just respawn as neccesary . it really is the best option , they have no intention of fixing the abysmal food system for a very long time , they cant even keep the game going despite hundreds of us voicing our concerns week 1. {they ignored everyone btw now game is effectivly dead in the water }

the barrels only weigh like 185 filled...it reduces the weight of water

Leave the lid open on your barrel(s) before you log out, and it has magically filled up some (even if you are in super-dry areas which seem to never have rain :D)

What's wrong with the food system? So far my only gripe is that I haven't noticed any effect from vitamins imbalance. Maybe I haven't had it get bad enough for ill effect, or there's only a balance buff and no imbalance debuff.
