Once you're past level 8, we encourage players not to stick around. Set your sails!
I am pretty sure resistance affects this.
I think you can get up to 1.5 day decay time on a ship if you put all points in resistance. (this is why a lot of people store their ships aswell as rafts with storage boxes in freeports)
A kinda bad mechanic since it means people can store all their valuable items there, it is also more effort for solo players to keep the ship maintained. Doable for a solo player but so much effort you won't really do it.
Freeports is also the best place to build ships, a fully anchored ship can't be destroyed in a freeport and can hold any weight.
Freeports have faster respawning resources and no hostile animals and you can safely store your tames there aswell.
I have solo built a galleon in a freeport once maybe a year ago, I forgot how long it took but I think it was around 3 hours but not sure if that was with travel time to go from freeport with thatch to freeport with a lot of wood, fiber and metal.
