Servers
How are the servers set up? Is the whole map when you make a server? I heard the servers were by quadrants and that you have to buy each and everyone of them to have the whole map. Which doesn't make any sense, as people would be wasting money on water -_-

So there is the official servers map. You can play on the official servers, which is 15 x 15 grids, for 225 "servers"

You can play single player and use that map above.

You can play single player on Blackwood, which is a 1 grid map with like 9 islands or so (normally each grid has 5 or 6 islands). Some private servers also host the Blackwood map. Takes just one server rental to run it.

You can play on an unofficial server, which could have anywhere from 1 to 100 grids. I've played on a 9 x 9, 5 x 5, 4 x 4, 3 x 3, 2 x 2 (and a few odd arrangements not square). These typically run more than one grid per actual server PC that hosts them. A 2 x 2 might be a single PC, or a couple.

You can host your own. This is what you meant by " buy each and everyone of them to have the whole map". But it is up to you how many grids you want. There is software to create your own grids out of a set of islands that you can place, but I think some hosting services will have pre-made grids for you that you can pick from.

There are so many hosting companies, and they all might do things a bit differently. I've never tried to host my own Atlas server, I'm happy playing either single player or unofficial servers that are out there.

Could I do a server that is the whole map like it is in singleplayer?

Not unless you are made of money. That would cost too much. I think I saw one game community that tried that, but I don't think they did it for very long.

If you want to see what that is like, you can play the official servers, but I don't like them personally. I played the PvE official north america the first couple of weeks that the game was out. I switched to unofficial as soon as some good servers came out. i think the first I played was a 2 x 2 grid setup.

I haven't tried the officials since they were wiped and the claim system was changed. When I first played, you could sail a long time before finding a place where you could place a flag. No idea what it is like now, but I suspect not that different. I would guess there are a lot of people just logging in once a week to maintain their claim.

I've even seen unofficial servers where it is like that with no place to place a flag. Something about how people treat something when it is in limited supply (they hoard more than they need) when there are no rules to stop them from claiming more. Although the new claim flag system is supposed to address that, I've just never checked to see if it does.

Do you know the costs exactly? Cause I want a fresh server of the whole map and have people join in as pvp. Or at least so I can play with my brother. Is there tethering in here too?

Say a server costs you $10 a month for ease of calculation and you wanted the whole map.......225 x $10 is $2250 a month.

Trying to understand this myself... I would like to make a non public dedicated server for my wife and I and am confused why I cant use the entire map. If its just the two of us, wouldn't the server only load the 'chunks' that we are in? In that way there shouldnt' be any need to ever feel the impact of a bigger map. If not that is completely asinine design.

Minecraft has an infinite world but you can host 10 players + mods with a potato.

Think you can host it for you and wife ...its under option ..

doing it that way forces tethering - not what we desire.

Options
1. Play officials (access entire ocean map grid)
2. Play single player (Ocean map grid or Singe blackwood)
3. Host local and have a tether with other players, since it is then your acount that is activating the server/grid and everyone else needs to stay in the same area as the hosted account. i.. think.. lol Never tried it!
4. Pay for an un official, rented server host.. Chose from 1 to, the entire ocean map.
Each server cost a chunk to run/rent.

You and wife will be tethered.. The game/map keeps what ever the HOST is in, rendered. .. hrmms. yeah.. sounds right.

As far as costs.. it can get up into the thousands monthly to host entire map.. from what I hear. It depends on a few things.. who you are renting from, How many servers (grid chunks( you want to rent and what player count per grid you want to set.. Having every grid with a 10 player max count is cheaper than one with 100 player cap.. and so on.
