You can also place map pins down either from the ATLAS tab of inventory or by hitting [N] (Least my keybind is set to that) while the map hand is up.
If it's a minimap you're wanting where you don't need the map being held, you'll want to get a sextant and do it's star finding minigame. The more stars you find (Up to a certain amount) the longer the sextant minimap stays up.
Also, obtaining a sextant and using it to gain the sextant buff will show what direction you are going in at all times at the top of your screen. (I've not played enough Ark to recall if it's like Ark, but it is like 7DTD if you've played that). It also gives other information that is useful when sailing such as ship speed, etc.
I play on official servers, so I'm unfortunately not familiar with the mods available for Atlas and can't say if there's one out there that permanently puts a directional tool at the top of the screen.
I also was confused by the font on the compass when I first started playing. The design of the W could very easily also be an E. But I've gotten used to remembering that the E on the compass has angles and the W has curves. But yeah, a poor font choice for sure.
