I believe its so some one can command their ship from a diff position, or so some one can control guns while another is sailing.

As near as I can tell, all it's good for is controlling sails and maybe cannons (I never tried the cannons). In my tests, it does NOT allow you to steer the ship, even if you have an NPC helmsman at the wheel. As such, it's really only useful on a ship when you have at least two players: one player to man the wheel, and the other to man the podium. That way, the player on the wheel can focus on steering while the player on the podium focuses on the sails.

Meant for another real player to get on, They will get control of your NPC's on sails and Cannon's. Allowing the Captain to focus on just steering.

You can split the roles as well, Between the two positions. So if you'd like to steer and run sails, you can while your friend controls the npc's on the cannons.

No power get's taken away from either station, But only the person on the wheel can steer.

I highly recommend the station if you have NPC's on cannons. Since steering and directing sails can be hard enough to manage, while trying to also aim your cannon's to fire.

It is good to control the crew groups thing, I mean sometimes you and your the one piloting it may want to shoot two different things at the same time, so the podium lets u control more...

Also its good when turning the ship as you can move the sail to the wind direction so the one piloting don't have to release the turning buttom
