Even passive tames only let you feed from the front side.
Sometimes you can get the sweet spot, it's basically standing on their back so to speak. just behind the head. There you can often feed without getting hit, but it really depends where they drop in your pen sometimes you can't get to it.
I haven't actually found honey myself, just had a bunch someone gave me.
note;
dont go too close. if you can loosen the bola, you are close enough to feed.
dont go too far towards the head, or you will get bitten.
if you are in a good position, you can look up and down to find the "feed"
For being attacked by other animals. have mates to help you, or build a secondary cage around, in case the animal you are taming is leaning outside the cage (this also defends the tame a bit more)
You can always feed the animal without being hit by it, unless its leaning against a wall with its backside, since you cant interact through a wall. what i mention here, works best if you are staning on the same floor level as the tame.
hope this can help you a little with tames
I hope that goes for feeding as well. I get the feeling my cow will only eat rushes even after being tamed, which is annoying because my base location doesnt have that.
