When discovering an island, it gives 1 discovery point, don't know if anything else grants them and didn't know they are needed in any way.

Just spawn at a new area. Lawless or a freeport you haven't been to.

I’m going to new ports and I’m still not getting any discovery points

Perhaps that's visiting different server grids?, not sure, it always says "new discovery" when visiting islands not grids but who knows.

Isn't collecting the power stones suppose to help for max level?

When you reach max lvl it should tell you how many discovery points you need to lvl up past max,
You get discovery points for touching non port islands for the first time, finding hidden sections on islands, finding ruins, finding leftovers from the old world and other such things.

As for the power stones that is for fighting the kraken a endgame boss to unlock the final skill tree which gives magic abilitys, magic items, magic ship designs ect but they have not implemented it yet.
(if you'v played ark the magic skill tree works like tek tier)

Tho if the trailer was anything to go by on the kraken it's expected for you to have a giant group of galleons to fight it and you'll end up losing most of them.

Most likly they expect all 150 people on the server to be working together to beat the thing not that such a thing will happen outside of the mega companys.

Well when you say finding things for the first time, is it hte first time on the server your on, or hte first time in your gameplay of the entire game?

@nick on the server, each server has a list of discoverys and you get a point for finding each one the first time.

can you see those discoverys listed, or not (you probably cant)

Go to inventory and on top there are multiple bars like skills, atlas etc, there somewhere are discoveries, each grid have their own.

You can get a discovery for each landfall you can make in zones that are not Freeport. There's also additional discoveries that are hidden in each Zone and can be anything from walking through a carved-out portion of a mountain or exploring a beached pirate ship. You just have to thoroughly search every Island from Shore to center from Peak to Valley to find the discoveries.

I think discovery points are one of the worst ideas in the game. At best it feels like an artificial attempt to get people to explore the map. At worst it feels the developers are so proud of their map they want you to 'enjoy' it all (whether you want to or not). To me the diversification of resources is enough to drive you to explore a portion of the map. Curiosity should be the other motivator and that's a very individual thing.
