Farming Basics
Can some one tell me the basics to farming, what all do I need to get started?

Well, here's what i know...not complete in the slightest and some may be guesswork, but:

* I only made a small crop plot and like everything else in the game, they are HUGE--think large crop plot sized in Ark. I have no idea what a large crop plot looks like but it could well be daunting.

* Fertilizer, on the other hand, is easy--no compost bin, just one animal poop and a heap of thatch. Can't remember the exact number, but less than 100. Crafted right there in your inventory.

* If there's a way to water your crop plot with a waterskin, I couldn't find it, and I tried a lot of diffrerent ways to pipe water from a water reservoir with no luck. Wasn't on a good place to pipe through to a water tile, either. However, even in the desert biome, there's enough invisible rain (think the city area in Extinction if you played that map) to fill a small crop plot if you just let it sit. If you are farming in the desert, my advice would be to let it fill to 600 then drop a seed.

* There's a minigame weirdly reminiscent of the Stardew Valley fishing mechanic to increase growth speed/harvest amount. With a shovel in your hotbar, you have three chances per growth stage to "till the earth"--there's a bar with a fast-moving slider, and you want to try to stop it in a highlighted section of the bar.

* This...may be guesswork? But when my maize reached the fruitling stage, I couldn't harvest it until I had a sickle on my hotbar. Only then did I have the "E" to harvest key.

* I can't remember if I had 1 or 2 hits on the final harvest bonus, but one small crop plot only gave me three maize, so I'd suggest planting in bulk. It may have kept growing like it does in Ark, but there was no way to access the inventory, the E key had vanished, and I was basically just waiting around to see if cultivated maize was also bugged before leaving the server, so I don't actually know what would happen if you let it continue to sit before harvesting. Maybe you'd harvest a larger amount...but I doubt it, as I let it sit for a full in game day at fruitling before it occurred to me to craft a sickle, and I still only got 3 maize.

* Can confirm that you need to turn wild seeds into tame plants before you can use them in cooking recipes, though. (Wild maize won't do--it has to be plain old maize, which you farmed. Could be a bug, no idea.)

Good luck!

well start by gathering enough fiber for a hat. Get you some protection at least. Next farm stones, wood, thatch and more fiber for a pick. You can punch stones in this game but be careful because they hurt a lot. After you get your pick work towards getting a hatchet. Next make some spears. You also have four vitamins to keep track of. Vitamin A is the yellow ones. Vitamin A consists of coconuts, parsley and other plant based food items. Vitamin B is gonna be meat. Get easy meat from chickens but watch out for alpha chickens. They hurt. No joke. Sheep also provide good early game meat. Vitamin C is gonna be veggies and berries. Finally Vitamin D is gonna be fish. Look for manta rays that breach the surface and have died. Do not go too far out for them it is not worth it. Bass and Tuna are easy to kill and do not fight back. They are quick though so be fast. Be careful when attacking cows because bulls get aggroed by you attacking their cows. They no like. That should be the basics. Also one last thing different things can be the same resource. As in bones and turtle shells are keratinoids. Hair, fur, pelt, leather and scales can all be hide. Just look for the icons in the upper right hand corner of their item pic. Also on food items look for a color arrow on the bottom right of their item pic. This will tell you what vitamin it is. Overeating actually hurts and eating too much on one vitamin can kill you and cause a weird effect that is similar to dilo spit. And be mindful of where the wind is going.

Oh sorry. I meant literally farming. But thank you for this insight.

I hope they make the crop plots lockable in Atlas or it will be a waste of time.

ciceqi how long did it take for the corn to be able to be harvested from the crop?

Okay guys. For farming I can confirm most of the questions here.

There is 0 difference between large and small crop plots at this time. Save your points and go small.

Crops "grow" like in Ark, so wait about an hour between harvests, and make sure you "till" between harvests. ((Put a shovel on your hotbar and play the mini game. If you don't think you can hit the 'sweet spot, don't click. Just wait till the game stops and try again.)) This will give them a 'greenhouse' growth effect. ((The upgraded yield.)

To irrigate a crop plot, you need a Reservoir or a fresh water source with a pipe system. And then you need an 'Irrigated water pipe'. Which has holes in the pipe that sprinkles water on your plots when they are low on water. Or, if you plant them where there is plenty of rain, ((A tropics location)), the natural rain fall will do the irrigation for you.

You do not need a sickle to harvest plots. Some are just picky where you stand, so adjust your position till you get the harvest option.

As someone else said, you have to grow certain crops before you can cook with the variant you need. Wild rice is not the same as rice. Nor is wild maize the same as maize. Patience is a mist have, as unlike Ark, farming is a pain in the ass...

hey just wondering if anyone know if it is still possible to plant crops? because when i look at the seed discription where it says what kind of soil it can't be planted says its can't grow in any kind of soil or am i wrong?

places which it can't be planted -no soil,polar dirt , tundra rock,temperate rock,equatorial,desert rock,tropical rock, polar rock,tundra fresh,tropical fresh, equatorial flesh,tundra water,temperate water ,equatorial water,desert water,tropical water,ice,snow.

so is there any other kind of soil lol?
