How to get started at fishing?
How do you get started with fishing after you've crafted your first fishing pole?
Apparently you need baits to get going. Where do you find such like sap etc for baits?

Just craft a spear, jump into water and hit the fish 2 times, click on hit to grab it with E, pull it to land and rigthclick to drop and hit it with axe for more meat, pickaxe more skin etc.

I'm playing on tundra and getting wet in the cold climate gets you into serious trouble early on. Have to build lots of fires to dry yourself and get warm again.

Thats why more keen on doing the fishing from the shore with a pole.

ah sorry no idea how pole works, never needed it for my regions as of spear fishing.

If it is anything like Ark then there actually need to be fish where you cast, however unlike ark the fish arent quite as plentiful so yeah, unless I am missing something?

I haven't been even able to equip the pole. Assuming one has to eqip it just like pickaxe to be able to cast with it.

Probably can equip it only when you've got sap in your inventory. Dunno

Holy crap I finally caught a fish with a fishing pole. Here's how I managed it.

First, get a fishing pole, suds, a chair and a raft (maybe you can fish from land by placing the chair on a foundation near some water but I have not tried that). Place the chair on the raft and head out to the sea. Stop the raft, sit in chair and equip fishing pole.

You may be able to see some fish in water already, so aim at the water surface near the fish and press RMB. If you don't see any fish, you can either try to move to a different location or you can cast the line anyway and some fish will spawn nearby eventually (this is how it went for me). Casting the line towards some existing fish is most likely faster than waiting for them to spawn. Then just wait until you get a QTE.

The QTE will tell you to press a key (QWEASDZXC) to reel the fish it. You will have to do it several times in a row and if successfull you will be rewarded with fish meat.

Since I only started fishing like an hour ago and so far only got 3 fish I may be wrong on some points but this is how it worked for me. However, it seems that it would be much faster to just jump in the water and spear the fish. Maybe in shark infested waters fishing from the safety of the raft is more useful but otherwise it seems like a waste of time so far.

Confirmation: it also works from a chair in a pond.

You forgot the "dodge 12 crocks, 10 tigres, and 15 giant snakes on the way to and from the water" part. Oh and "while in the water, you may kill a fish and have a tiger spawn on top of you".

I get hvaing to dig for water. I hate the minigame. I like the _idea_ of the vitamin systme, but it's too agressive. I like the idea of fish being a resource separate from meat, but either predator spawns need to be lowered or/and fish need to be more plentiful.

The only bad part of fishing with a pole is finding the right bait, and having to sit in a chair. Spear fishing it not the easiest way as you get wet, and cold. Not to mention the rays will attack you. Good luck.
