You are limited to the grids the servers are running and can not zone beyond them. The grids run by the server are always active. This is why several servers are needed
A non-dedicated can have the entire world, but you have to remain with the host player. So you can't travel to other grids without the host. That's the pros and cons for dedicated and non-dedicated
Ok cool this is the info I needed.
I was playing non dedicated host and changed the tether distance to 99.0 and everything was going fine until people go a bit far out to sea in the same zone and then anyone too far from the host starts not being able to pick up or interact with things though they are not being tethered to the host. Do I need to change the tether distance up more? Or is this a limitation of abusing the tether distance way past the slider range?
You are abusing the purpose of non-dedicated. The purpose of that mode is to allow you to play "together" with your friends. By together, it means in the same tribe, in the same location, in the same ship. Not multiple people doing their own thing.
If you want to have multiple people, multiple tribes, in multiple locations, you need a dedicated server. Don't even attempt to do this with a non-dedicated, it was never made for that and will never work.
There are some good server owners out there. If you don't want to go to all the trouble to rent and host your own server(s), you can join a server already out there. It will not be easy to find a good one and a reliable one, but a lot cheaper and easier than renting your own.
BTW, a non-dedicated server would not normally be considered under that category of a private server. Most people that run one of these would not open it up to the internet, they would just play with some family members in the same location. You would bring it up and play with some family and friends and then shut it down when you are done. A private (unofficial) server is one that is left running 24/7 typically.
yeah thanks, I know all this already but i appreciate your input. Me and my wife have been playing together no problems as you speak of just fine, but when my 2 friends are on we are ok with being in the same zone but we are actually stuck being on the same landfall location(island).
So if someone wants to go explore a little in their boat to another island it goes all screwy sadly. Everyone can sail and ride around etc but the shrubs and trees stop being harvestable when too far.
I would like to run a dedicated server that worked like the non-dedicated one. ie anyone can go anywhere in a zone but when a admin zones it drags the group through. I cannot imagine playing this game at all if yo uwere stuick in 1 zone or a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ 2x2 zone etc. so non dedicated it is for now
Think of it as friends coming into the hosts game to help him/her out. When I join a friend, I ask what his goals are, and then I help him with that
