ATLAS
The taming bit is a bit of an annoyance really!
As an old Ark player and new to Atlas, I find this taming by almost killing stuff a nuisance. I often do that, endning up killing them instead. Any good tricks to use? I guess a taming pit is one way to go.

I played Ark for many years aswell and in my opinion, taming in Atlas is way more easy and faster. Once you have trapped a creature with a taming pen or just bola it and built some foundations and walls (doorframes), the challenge is done.
You will find out that feeding any kinds of animals is not really hard if you have done it several times. You will know where to stand and when to feed.
Sry for that english xD

There's good and bad about the system in Atlas. Taming predators is somewhat easier. Like Ark, build a pen, aggro, lure them in. Feeding them is simpler and a bit more immersive, and the damage/bola thing isn't too bad once you get used to it.

Taming birds is sketchy. So easy to unintentionally kill them if you get a head hit on them. Lost a beautiful parrot I wanted due to that.

Taming a horse though... urgh... If we could stop it running away or be certain which way it would run, so we could position a tame pen, but no, instead you almost have to rely on them getting stuck somewhere.

At some point, when I don't have 50 other things planned, I want to do some experiments though. I'm going to try using a blackjack, probably a nice BP one for max torpor, and try to knock out a bird and drag it into a taming pen. With a horse, I'll try letting a monkey loose on it, to keep it from running hopefully long enough to KO it and either drag it to a pen or build a pen around it.

ARK taming LOL..nuisance? you mean compared to taking an HOUR+!! and massive amounts of preparing and making nacotics just to tame a damn beaver?
Giga? perhaps how easy it is to SOLO tame a tapejara or a that other bigger bird?(forgot its name)

no thanks. atlas taming is cake in comparison and I can do it within a few minutes.

Steelfire i can tell you haven't tamed nearly as much as i have in atlas so i'm gonna give you 1 super tip.

make a cage, find a horse, place cage over horse, beat horse with something, bola and feed.

horses are the easiest animal to catch and tame.

i have tamed everything now except the giant tortugar, and i can tell you there is a super easy way to tame them all.

I stopped using traps to tame stuff months ago. I use a bear for just about everything.

Solo taming anything I Ark is easy, if you know what you're doing; it's just time consuming, yes. More time is spent looking for the perfect tame though. *shrug*

I think a more valid comparison of taming effort would be something like a giga or quetz versus taming the drake or one of the other boss monsters. In which case, I'll take the giga or quetz any day.

Wait... the game let's you clip a cage over an animal? ROFL, that's absolutely hilarious. I'm amazed they haven't fixed that.
Nokim Jul 17, 2019 @ 8:51am
even if not clipped it takes a bit more skill but i have caught horses by quickly placing the cage in front of them spinning it in their direction and opening the door and closing it once they walk in.

I caught my first lvl 30 horse that way.

btw similar tactic works on crows. ecept i quickly place a foundation down 4 walls, ceiling and door, then remove cage and walk in with bola and i fist fight the crows down.

Yeah, fist-fighting the birds is the way I go... except when they decide to be stubborn and fly out over the water or up high, then a single arrow is enough to get them back... except when you get unlucky enough that the arrow manages to hit them straight in the head. :/

But, yeah, okay, I'll try the cage thing next time I need to tame a horse.

Lol... Thought the same. Cheesy mechanic. The logic of the cage is there, but being able to clip the cage over the animal.... A bit cheesy. But if it works..... It's good. Tamed my first horse when it got stuck on a stair case......and I thought that was a bit cheesy. Placing food in a cage to lure the animal inside is logical...but no mechanic for that....go figure.

Well, I managed to force a horse into a dead end with a gang tame pigs. Got it down to red, bola it and whent over to feed it ... and it bit me and my pigs killed it because I forgot to put them on passive, well didn't know the bloody horse would hurt me.

This needs getting used to, I guess. I preffers the Ark way, but then I play solo and I have shorten the time for taming. So it's not a big bother, just enough for keeping me on my toes.

I use a mod on my single-player game that introduces a very similar taming system to Ark which lets you produce tranq darts and tranq arrows, passive feeding for a lot of herbivores and special foods for Atlas animals as well as the Ark animals it introduces to the game. It's nice to snag a Quetz, Tapejara, Terror Bird, etc.

In Ark, its all about the tames. In Atlas, taming is only a small part of the game. Some people think there should be no taming in Atlas. I dont agree with that as well as I think the taming some be a little more in depth that tranq and feed. I personally am fine with it. Same with the breeding mechanics now that they made it so you dont have to babysit the lil one from birth till adult.. that was a bit much lol

BTW for many of the beasts that are Horse sized and smaller, drop a cage (from the piracy tree) on them, done, no more chasing them clear across an island.. same for shoulder pets, If no cage for birds, get them to chase you into a building. :) OR use that mod there! lol

The tips and tricks of holding a beast still from Ark, works in Atlas, as well Atlas has a couple extra ones, people might not think of using (like the cage trick) hehe

i did retarded amounts of breeding in ark. i dont miss it.

i'm doing some in atlas but mostly as i need it. i've tamed a few things i have no use for just for fun. few days ago i tamed a crab. turns out theres a pretty good use for it in pve.

i can travel thru an island pretty darn fast, its got high carry weight and as a bonus i can use it to scout for tames and carry them if i find one. well the small animals anyways.

and it looks cool as hell as an ornament on the back of my galleon.

the only one i can't find is that giant tortugar, but im not exactly trying that hard to find it.
Liatni Jul 17, 2019 @ 3:24pm
It only spawns on those select islands and I think it is in the same spawn group as other beasts (elephants maybe?) So, if there is not one spawned on the island.. might have to cull wildlife till one pops up (same as alpha spawns, its a shared spawn thing with a small percent attached)
