Edit: Besides, what stereotypical pirate captain doesn't have a parrot or monkey.
Monkey can be useful but, just dont bother. lol
I spec into taming but I never actually tamed an animal (always had animal specialists in my company while I focused on music, cooking, throwing knivesc captaineering and piracy). I can ride
my group did a quality 60 mythic map and it spawned a massive wave of lvl 255 undead. we took a good beating with 5 mounted players on lvl 90-100 bears. all our bears had atleast 1k health and about 220-250melee.
As for taming, you pretty much can't just approach the animal's head. Crouching and hugging against their belly and looking toward their head and moving just close enough to get the feed message seems to work well. Make sure to watch the bola timer versus the feed timer and get yourself safe and ready to repeat the process. You'll want to trap them as well, to protect you and them during the process.
I'll always suggest not being reluctant to doing some research; learning about the game, critters, and what other people have already figured out that works.
