ATLAS
Looking for Private Server Hosting Details for Dummies
I'm looking for more details regarding how Atlas Game Server Hosting works. Especially how many "zones" (aka in game servers or zones, like "H8") you get.

I've heard rumors at either extreme. Just one tile? A fixed 3x3 grid? A dynamic 3x3 grid moves with the player(s) that covers the whole game map? Or the entire game map. It goes without saying that being able to move from one grid to another is the most desirable.

Survival Servers suggest you're purchasing multiple game tiles.

Nitrado Servers is all over the place in terms of servers & price.

Any other Atlas Game Server Hosting provider recommendations?

Looking for turnkey solutions, not into editing code to make servers work.

Thanks!

It's scalable. The official Atlas is a 15x15 grid of 225 servers but unofficial can be as small as a 1x1. The requirements per Grid/Server are 4GB RAM, 2 Cores, 20GB. This is why these services seems to be all over the place.

Thanks for the info.

I can see how those RAM / HD space requirements can really limit how many tiles you're hosting, but who wants to play on just a couple tiles due to h/w requirements, or pay upwards to $100./month for only 6 servers? A 5x5 grid might work for a small group of players, but it just seems like Too much $$ for not enough game map.

Also, as far as end game. How do you fit in all the power stones, Maw, polar dungeon into one game tile?

Are there any other options or am I missing something? I'd really appreciate hearing from folks hosting private servers - Thanks!
Have you hosted an Ark server before? If so, did you cluster servers together? That's essentially what you do to run multiple regions for an Atlas server. Each region is a separate server instance. There's no way around hosting a multi-region map without the hardware to back it up, real servers (ie, multi-processor servers with lots of RAM and RAID arrays) running multiple VMs, or multiple PCs running 1 or 2 servers.

The maps are made using the server grid editor. You basically set the region's climate, then add/edit islands. You could possibly set up a single grid with most of the island types, but I doubt you could put the maw and everything else into the same grid. The grid editor creates a JSON file that basically configures your grid servers (you need to edit this file manually to point each grid to it's server IP) and a bunch of images for the region maps that need to be placed in the corresponding folder on your server.

The grid editor can be found here -> https://github.com/GrapeshotGames/ServerGridEditor

You might want to have a play around with it and get an idea of how it functions, you'll probably learn most of what you want to know from it. There's also a guide somewhere on how to set up your own small server.

In the future mods. They already showcased an all-in-one map so to speak for this very purpose, it is not yet released, and there will most likely be more down the line. For now *I think* you need a minimum of 5x5 for all PS/Maw/Caves which only a few are able to host/afford for the very reasons you listed above. Islands/Discoveries/PoI's can be placed manually and each servers/grid can be configured to your hearts content but at what cost!?!? lol

Isolde (the author of the Ark map mod ISO: Crystal Isle) has been working in conjunction with
Grapeshot on a small server/single player map for Atlas.

But you can fit everything into a 2x2 map just fyi.
Thanks for the info folks. Yes I'm a total hosting noob, never done it. Which is why I have so many basic questions. Not looking to host from my rig per se. Looking into more turnkey hosting services(for a very small group, like 4-8) like Survival Servers, Nitrado, or any others the community might suggest.

Have to say though, some map editing (for dummies) would be sweet.

I've said from the beginning, that whoever did up ARK's "The Centre" map should be hired to do up a world for Atlas. Such an obvious labour of love with eye candy around every corner - an explorers dream.
